Day Case Theatres. Royal Derby Hospital.

Currently in my second academic year of study to become an Assistant Theatre Practitioner.

“Having been a Health Care Assistant (HCA), for six years, in the Day Case theatres the opportunity arose to train as an Assistant Theatre Practitioner (AP). This has allowed me to develop my existing knowledge and skills, and to utilise my experiences as a HCA, to fit the new role. This involved gaining a better understanding of many aspects of my own theatre environment. Aspects that I was aware of but only to a level relevant to my previous role. It should also be noted that prior to this and as part of the entry requirement I had completed the QCF 3, an NVQ Level 3 equivalent, diploma in Perioperative Care.

The AP training involves undertaking a two year part-time academic course at the University of Derby and in-house. I have found that the course has been challenging but in a positive and enjoyable way, having not been at university for 20 years. This course consists of gaining a better understanding of the background and frameworks which govern theatre working. The in-house training has also been a positive experience and has given me a greater insight of the scrub role. My mentor in Day Case, Tina, has been extremely supportive and has provided her own wealth of knowledge and personal experiences which has been invaluable to my progression.

I feel that the AP role itself will give me more flexibility in the future as I will be able to undertake both Healthcare Assistant and Assistant Practitioner jobs. This flexibility is key to the ever changing theatre environment and will aid in bridging the healthcare skills gap that has been forecast for the upcoming years and I am looking forward to the challenges this will present me.”….. “I came to the RDH to join the NHS and work as an apprentice in Theatres, General Theatres.

I came into the department with open mind, everyone is lovely and the work is incredible but after a short while of being there I came to realise it wasn't for me I became upset and very anxious and felt like not turning in so I spoke up to Corinne and she helped me and will forever be grateful for her kindness she shown me.

I was going to a ward instead I was thrilled that I didn't have to go back into Theatres but always had in my heart Recovery, I have always wanted to work in Recovery but what I did not know until now that there was only resisted staff in these departments, I was totally gutted and thought my chances of ever doing what I really wanted to do was gone until...

Nigel then had a word with me and asked me, What do you want to do? What is it that you want to achieve in the long run? so I answered I really want to work in Recovery, do my course and then go on to be a recovery nurse.

Since I have been given the chance thanks to Nigel as he said he believes in giving people a chance and told me his story of achievement I have been working so hard and learnt so much already,

Working in Recovery means everything to me, I feel like I have been given an amazing opportunity to show I am serious about the role and work with such hardworking wonderful and kind people”…… Mandy Hodgson
