History of the Bear Mountain Bridge: In 1776, this narrow portion was “spanned” by the Americans during the Revolutionary War to prevent passage of British navy. It was taken apart by the British during battles at Fort Clinton and Fort Montgomery, but Americans rebuilt it two years later at West Point. The initial cost of the bridge was $2,900,000. In all, the bridge cost $6,000,000 After it was made there was not a single injury nor death on the bridge. The bridge right now is 92 years old.

This is an image of the Bear Mountain Bridge just after construction. It was turned over to the State of New York in 1940 after sixteen years without profit.

How and When Bear Mountain Bridge was made: The Bear Mountain Bridge started construction in 1923. It ended in 1924. It is a suspension bridge, the longest one ever to be made at its time. It is made of parallel wire cables and a concrete deck. Holton D. Robinson was the prime engineer of the bridge. Baird and Hodges were design engineers who helped create a more tunnel-like appearance. Steel was used instead of masonry due to a time constraint. In order to please the people and maintain the natural beauty of the river, Howard Baird (the consulting engineer) modified the bridge’s design to better fit its location.

The importance of Bear Mountain Bridge: It connects the counties of Orange/Rockland and Westchester/Putnam. In 1868, the Hudson Highland Suspension Bridge Company attempted to build the bridge at Anthony’s Point in order to reduce the cost of transporting coal from Pennsylvania to New England. To get to Bear Mountain Park, there was a long wait for a ferry. In winter and at night, people were not able to cross at all! Due to these issues, a bill was introduced in 1922 to create the Bear Mountain Hudson Bridge Company, financed by E. Roland Harriman. It gave them the authority to build a bridge and maintain it for thirty years. After this, the bridge belonged to the state.

How the Bear Mountain Bridge is maintained: To get across the eastbound side of the bridge is $1.50. E-Z Pass is allowed on the bridge, lowering the cost to $1.00. As with all bridges under the New York State Bridge Association, this bridge relies solely on tolls, receiving no federal or state funding for its maintenance. Replacement Cost: $120,035,000
