“For the first half of the '70s, the

Allman

Brothers Band was the most influential rock group in America, redefining rock music and its boundaries” allmusic.comSlide3

Duane and greg

allmanSlide4

They have always had an interest in music

Always around it and constantly looked for ways to keep playing

Younger brother Greg encouraged older brother Duane to pick up the guitar and he would later become one of the best guitarists of all timesSlide5

Forming of the Allman

Brothers

Duane decided that he wanted to form a band so he recruited

Jaimoe

Johnson and Butch Trucks on drums, Dickey Betts on guitar and Berry Oakley on bass guitar to start the formation of the band.

At the bands jam session Duane knew right away that they had something special. He was quoted saying, “Anybody who doesn’t want to be in my band is going to have to fight his way out the door” (Rockhall.com)Slide6

They still lacked one more member so they sent out for Greg

style

The

Allman

Brothers decided that before they recorded anything, they wanted to get their name out to the public. They would do shows and that is how they gained the respect of their fans.

Their shows were a spectacular event. Their specialty was improvisation. They would play jams “sometimes in jams of 40 minutes or more to a single song without wasting a note”Slide8

Listening Guide for Stormy Monday

0:16: The actual melody starts with a calming blues feel with the guitar playing the melody and the drums giving percussion. The organ also plays back up chords to give it more of a southern blues feel. Overall the timbre of all the music creates a very recognizable contrast between the different

instrumentsSlide16

3:35 Guitar solo. Conjunct and plays scales. Not necessarily like a typical guitar solo to see how many notes you can fit in a measure but more masters of the blues. Spread out and continuing relaxing feeling. The bass guitar plays the back up to keep the melody line going. The tempo is still slow

Something

the

Allman

Brothers did very

wellSlide17

4:58 Throughout the guitar solo the artist typically uses single notes instead of chords to go through his solo but at this point picks up some chords and uses them to have a good contrast between this section and the rest of the solo. The dynamics of this part of the song would be forte

.

(Duane

Allman

was amazing at this part of music, he wasn’t trying to show off the amount of notes he could fit in a measure, rather play a smooth solo that just ran together perfectly with the rest of the song)Slide18

5:35 To end the organ solo instead of playing single notes, Greg holds several chords to end his solo which then transition into the original melody from the beginning of the song to transition very smoothly into another guitar solo

Throughout the rest of this section there are different scattered guitar solos mixed in with the melodies played by the bass and organSlide19

7:44 The 4

th

verse starts as the song begins its conclusion

8:24 The ending melody is played here in a slower tempo fashion and concludes with an ensemble of all the instruments with an harmonica playing scales and the drums playing multiple notes and ending the whole song on a very hard distinct note by the

drumsSlide20

Statesboro Blues

Listening Guide

0:22 The whole song enters into the main melody with the guitar still playing the lead part. You can pick up on a keyboard plunking away in the back ground for the guitar and the bass is playing its bass line in a very conjunct manner creating a nice ensemble of music

This song has a nice fast placed blues feel which automatically gets you tapping your foot along with the beatSlide22

The famous slide guitar solo begins at 1:31. Duane put a lot of thought and consideration into his solo as to not have tons of notes up and down a scale. Each note in not just this solo but all solos, has a specific purposeSlide23

2:17 Bridge. All the instruments start off the bridge playing a typical 5 note blues melody and they all have a rest which is when the vocals come in and play in between rests of the instruments.Slide24

Coda begins at 4:09 with a small drum roll and ends with a hard note to end the song.Slide25

Conclusion

Overall The

Allman

Brothers in their prime were a force to be reckoned with in the musical world. Their taste for making and writing music was inspirational for many. It is still a shame that Duane

Allman

died so early in the

Allman

Brothers career.Slide26
