POLITICAL

THE BY-ELECTIONS 2014

Dublin South West Slide3

Voting were held for the By-Election on October 10

th

2014 in the National Basketball Arena Tallaght. The result saw Paul Murphy under the banner of the Anti Austerity Alliance winning the election. He is also a member of the Socialist Party. The By-Elections sent out different messages to the public. There was an article in The Herald newspaper that mentioned how the public politics in this day in age are very unpredictable.

In this article also it mentions how even the bookies got the outcome of the By-Elections wrong for the first time. Sinn Feins Cathal King was expected to do very well but instead Paul Murphy overshadowed him and ended up winning the overall election. There was just 566 votes between them. The final votes were 9,565 votes to 8,999.

There was a great quote in The Herald’s article saying ‘’An Electoral earthquake is taking place beneath our feet- and nobody can be sure what the landscape will look like afterwards.’’ This means that politics is changing in Ireland and no-one can see what the outcome of these election are. Slide4

The water charges was a very big topic and was shown in the results of the By-Elections. One of the reasons why Paul Murphy won the Dublin South West By-Elections is because he was against the water charges. He plead to the public not to send back their water packs and not to pay their bills are sent in January.

This is why he had the edge over Sinn Fein as there was a split in this party over the water charges, Gerry Adams backtracked his comment on paying for the water charges in his Donegal home, it is believed he will in fact pay. Cathal King also said he wouldn’t be paying his taxes but the Senior members of the party are believed to be paying the taxes. Their message on the water chages was not clear!

The water charges were a main reason in why Fine Gael and Labour didn’t do as well as they would of wanted in the By-Elections. Joan Burton of Labour is believed to have criticised water charge protestors for having expensive phones and ipads. This obviously outraged the public.

There was a quote from Murphy saying, ‘’The message to Government is to axe the tax or watch your vote collapse.”Slide5

In the Irish Independent there was a whole article on

Fianna

Fail Leader Michael Martin. In the By-Elections

Fianna Fail representative finished in sixth position and also received 4,500 fewer votes than the winner Socialist politician Paul Murphy. Because of this, TDs and Senators are now questioning Martins future of a Leader but they would really struggle in finding a replacement. Slide6

Front page news on 9

th

October 2014 and continued onto Page 17

Why is this a Socio-Cultural news story?

It is connected with the populations health and how the public attitude towards it. In turn this Fine could affect the demand for buying cigarettesSlide9

New law due to come in around February 2015

Anyone in a car smoking around a child or anyone g in a car under the age of 18 smoking will be guilty of this offence & fined

At a minimum the fine is €80 at a maximum €1,000

Implemented by Dr James Reilly- Minister for ChildrenHe states that :

Exposure to tobacco smoke is particularly harmful in enclosed spaces such as cars

Children’s exposure is involuntary and they’re

unable to remove themselves from the riskSlide10

Two Arguments To This Story

FOR

AGAINST

It will hopefully help

to reduce the risk of children developing smoke related health problems such as asthma & bronchitis

It is none of the governments business how

parents behave when their children are presentSlide11

Technological

US tech giants Apple & Facebook offer Female employee’s the chance to freeze their eggs !!

Overview

Apple & Facebook offer to pay female employees to freeze their eggs

The companies feel it will allow them to focus on building their careers

Willing to pay up to $20,000 for the procedure per employee

It has raised eyebrows in the media as there is no guarantee that doing this process will lead to future pregnancy.

Statistics in the UK showed that only 20 babies have been born using this procedure

Mixed

reaction to Apple egg freezing offer

Page 4 news section

Story starts off with the line “ There was a time when a snooker table in the workplace was enough”

Reporter states latest perk really ups the ante on the usual job perks

Apple follow in steps of Facebook and will offer this perk from January 2015

Could cost €10,000 plus €500 per year to store the eggs

Apple spokesperson said “We want to empower women to do the best work of their lives as they care for loved ones & raise their families”

Mixed reaction, Dr John

Waterstone

medical director at Cork university says its not always successful

He states research shows the chance of birth for a woman at age 25 having a baby after eggs are frozen was 31.5% this reduced to 19.3% when aged 35.

He said “ Offering to pay for egg freezing is almost encouraging women to delay having babies even further.”Slide13

Move by Tech giants to help women staff to freeze their eggs raises eyebrows

Page 2

Questions arise over the motivation behind this move by Apple.

Master of Rotunda hospital Sam Coulter Smith says “ I think its an unusual thing to do, to offer a service to people that they may not want.”

He also said “ Is It because they care about their health or is it because they want 15 years of productive work out of these women before maternity leave? “

Apple says it“ cares deeply for employees & families and we are always looking at new ways our health program can meet their needs”.

Facebook offers up to $20,000 (€16,000) for egg freezing

Women opting for this scheme will have to undergo an IVF type procedure according to Coulter smith.

He says there is also a problem with women getting this procedure in their later years as higher risk of diabetes.

Facebook will not be freezing the eggs of employees in Ireland as it is an optional benefit for US employees only.
