Description

Sere

The final

stage in succession and the most stable.

Pioneer

Species

An adjustment

to a species to enable it to survive in an area.

Climax Community

Living factors which increase as succession continues

through the stages.

Abiotic Factors

A stage in succession.

Adaptation

The number of different species, and amount of individuals

in each species.

Biotic Factors

Non-living factors which can be very hostile in the first stage.

Index of Diversity

The first species to colonise an area.Slide3

Primary succession is where dominant species colonise an area. They are highly adapted to the hostile biotic factors and when they decompose, they add nutrients and start to form basic soil. This makes the area more hostile and allows other species to start colonising the area. These organisms then out-compete the other organisms present and become the pioneer species. Succession continues to the final

, which is called the climax population. This has a very low index of diversity and many niches, resulting in the highest ecological stability of all stages. Slide4

Types of Succession

Primary (where there was NO soil)

Secondary (where SOME soil remains after a disturbance, e.g. after a fire)Slide5
