Problem Statement

Many roadways that are prone to flooding lack a city controlled contiguous alert system to warn drivers of dangerous water levels. Such a system could assist drivers in preventing vehicle damage and personal injury in cases where they proceed through inundated portions of the road. 211/15/2010

Slide3

Proposed Solution

Network of above ground ultrasonic sensors able to detect rising water levels in areas prone to floodingPhysical sign implemented to warn drivers of dangerous roadwaysCentralized data center for easy access by user-based applications311/15/2010

Challenges with Solution

People can ignore warning signsCannot assume that motorists will heed warningsInattentive drivers may not even see our signsCustom tailored design Hardware is essentially the same but networking of components could varyOptimal placement of sensors in flood prone areas will have to be planned accordingly2911/15/2010

Slide30

Benefits of Solution

Decrease in city expenses/Increased road safetyPaying police and firemen that are needed to block a flooded road or intersection and reroute trafficRescuing stranded motoristsWater damage expenses Traveler’s convenienceGoogle maps application can help travelers avoid flooded areas before they leave their houseWarning signs will alert drivers sooner so detours can be taken in advance3011/15/2010

Conclusion

Modular, sensor based solution to solve uncertainty of water depthConstant real-time data stream useful to the client through modular implementationWarning drivers done both physically and onlineSaves the client both time and money, while solving an issue of public safety3111/15/2010
