Mrs. Hames’ procedures Starters and notes for the beginning of the year.

Monday, August 8 Directions: COPY EVERYTHING ON THIS SLIDE STARTER PROCEDURES 2016-2017 Starters should always be answered in a complete sentence with correct grammar and punctuation. You have to write the question. You will keep them in your binder under the “starters” tab and turn them in each Friday.

Around the Room in mrs. Hames’ class

Entering the building/room How should you enter the building? Describe why it’s important to enter each class quietly without touching others . Always check the chalkboard to see what materials you need out for class. Make sure you have your materials ready before Starter time ends !

“Give me five.” Mrs. Hames will raise her hand and ask you to “give her five.” You are expected to raise your own hand and: Be quiet Look at Mrs. Hames Be still Put things down – hands are free Listen Your hand stays raised until Mrs. Hames tells you to go back to work

Codes In Building 12, we use codes to help us know what type of conversation is allowed. These codes will be called out, and you will need know what they mean. Code 0 - silence please Code 1 – talk only to the teacherCode 2 – talk only to your partner Code 3 – talk only to your team

“I’m finished” Is this your BEST work? Is it written clearly? Double check your work; correct mistakes Turn in or put to the side depending on directions READ - Library book /book from home - Literature book (always in your desk basket) - Quietly choose a book from the Borrowed Book shelf – always return before leaving the classroom

Consequences Thank you cards Thank you for being silent Thank you for staying on task. Flipping a card over to the “2” means that is your 2 nd warning before beginning the consequence menu (posted in the right hand corner of our room)

consequences Once the consequence menu has begun, it does not restart , but instead continues on from the last offense For example: If you had reached the first step of the consequence menu in my class, and then decided to get into trouble in Mrs. Mitchell’s class - you would automatically move to the second step on the menu.

Consequence menu – what is it? Steps: Silent desk at time of behavior – complete class work. Silent desk at time of behavior and Behavior Essay. Silent desk at time of behavior and Responsibility Paper with a Team conference and parent contact. Silent desk at time of behavior and Responsibility Paper. Building ISS. Silent desk at time of behavior. Office Referral.

Rewards – Yes – we have those, too. In 12A, we use a ticket system for rewards purposes. Tickets can be awarded for almost any behavior that I deem positive and appropriate including going above and beyond, helping a classmate, turning work in early...etc Tickets will be given out on an individual basis and can be cashed in for rewards when a certain number has been collected. Tickets have to have your first and last name as well as your block written on the back to be cashed in.

Pencils If needed, when should pencils be sharpened? If your pencil should break accidentally during teacher directed instruction, you ________________ and I will __________, which gives you permission to sharpen your pencil without ever saying a word. What happens when you come to class without a pencil?

Before class starts, look through all of your stuff – you never know where a pencil might be hiding. Quietly ask your team members (NOT other students throughout the room) if they have a pencil you can borrow for the block. Check the lost pencils cup as a last resort. *DO NOT use colored pencils, highlighters, or pens in place of a normal pencil. If step 1 and 2 fail – Ask Mrs. Hames if you can trade her for a pencil. Be prepared to trade one of your shoes for a sharpened pencil. At the end of class, sharpen the borrowed pencil and return it to Mrs. H. who will then return your shoe. when you come to class unprepared:

Asking a question Show me the appropriate way to raise your hand. List two reasons to raise your hand: Ask a question Give an on-topic statement

Turning in assignments Assignments will normally be taken up by one group member who will then turn it into your block’s slot at the front of the room. Before you ever turn in an assignment, you must check to make sure your FIRST and LAST name are in the upper right hand corner of your papers and highlighted followed by the date and the block that you are in.

Correct Paper heading: FIRST AND LAST NAME TODAY’S DATE BLOCK (1, 2, OR 3) Title of Assignment

Bathroom While in 12A, if you need to use the restroom you must go to the one directly outside my door, closest to Mrs. Mitchell’s room. Quietly raise your agenda ( already filled out with the correct information) if you must go to the bathroom. You receive six passes in my class each nine weeks. Once you are out – you’re out! Try to go to the bathroom in between classes .

Absences/Make-up work In 12A , it is the student’s responsibility to find out what work they missed when absent . I have a WEBSITE: LFMS Webpage Students have the total number of days they were absent to turn in make-up work before it is considered late. For example: If a student is absent for one day, they have 1 day to turn in their missing work before it is marked down for being late. How do you get a handout from a day you were absent?

If you a re absent you can: 1. Print your own copy of a paper or assignment from the webpage (Say you were sick on Friday – print it at home on Saturday, and have it ready to turn in when you come back to class on Monday!) OR 2. Come pick up your copy from the Absent Handouts Crate Simply look for the week that you missed (week 1-1 work would all be under tab 1), and find the paper with your name on it.

Starter work Starters are done everyday at the beginning of class. If you are absent, your starter should be up-to-date BEFORE you come back to my class. If you finish before time is up - READ Starter papers are to be kept up by each student for the entire week, and turned in on Friday.

Starters continued When we go over Starters – you are always welcome to change your answer. Study your Starters to prepare for quizzes on Fridays. Just like all absent work – if you miss a starter, it is on my webpage and you ARE expected to make it up outside of class time.

Starter pages should look like: Name Date Block Starter Title Day and Date (Monday August 8 th ) Write the question Start new line and answer in complete sentence 2. Write the question Start new line and answer in complete sentence… For every day of the week!

HOMEWORK Every night the assigned homework is to review your starter for the weekly quiz and study vocabulary words. If you leave class without completing a due assignment, it is homework and you are responsible for taking care of it without prompting.

HOMEWORK Assigned homework: Some nights I will assign homework – this will count towards your homework grade. When a homework assignment is due, I will ask that it is out on your desk when class begins. During starter time, I will check your assignment . IF it was completely finished and done as asked then you will receive a hole punch in the top right of your paper. You have 10 opportunities to work towards a perfect homework grade each nine weeks
