Metaphor

Definition

: a type of figurative language in which the terms of one thing are used to describe some other, non-related, item. Is used to draw a comparison between two things, which are generally not grouped together.

Example

:

My mom was boiling mad.

Simile

Definition

: closely related to the metaphor; type of figurative language in which two unlike things are compared to one another by using a phrase such as “like” or “as.”

Example

:

She’s as cunning as a fox.

Personification

Definition

: a literary device in which human characteristics are given to inanimate objects, or to other creatures that are not human (such as a tree, or the wind).

Example

:

The wind was howling last night

Hyperbole

Definition

:

Extreme exaggeration, not meant to be take seriously, but intentionally used to create a certain impression upon the audience.
