Agro HackathonHack 5: Agro Portal and VEST Registry

Our task in a new project
Mapping relevant standards and identifying areas where lack of standards is inhibiting
Map currently available open and proprietary standards in use for the exchange of key data on agriculture and nutrition
identify where lack of standards is inhibiting the effective use of agricultural and nutritional data and the best methods for promoting open data standardsSlide3
Project deliverable
1
st
deliverable:
Map of standards (in the form of an online database, iterative)
“From
the methodological point of view, we deem it important to build the map on existing databases and link to other ongoing mapping exercises (e.g. re-use the VEST directory and the Agro Portal
database)”Slide4
Where we are
There are already (at least) two online “directories” of vocabularies for the food and agriculture sector:
The
VEST Registry
on the AIMS website
The
Agro Portal
The
Agro Portal is a more technical interface, with dedicated advanced functionalities for RDF vocabularies including annotation services, import and export services, mapping services etc., while the VEST Registry
has a simplified
search and browse service for the broader community of information managers.Slide5
Where we want to goWe want to:
synchronize the content of the two directories
establish a workflow between the two
In the end, there should be only one interface to register / edit a vocabulary, while the two portals will continue to provide different access interfacesSlide6
Objective of hack n. 5Analyze
the Agro Portal metadata model, coverage, API and registration process
Use
the Agro Portal API and the VEST Registry ingestion function to synchronize the
content from the Agro Portal to the VEST
Ingest all the relevant metadata and links from the Agro Portal to the VEST RegistrySlide7
Hack n. 5: what we needDocumentation and/or knowledgeable person on the Agro Portal metadata model
Documentation
and/or knowledgeable person
on the Agro Portal API
(Possible?) an Agro Portal developer who could modify / add an API method on the fly?? (e.g. adding metadata in the response, adding an optional parameter?)Slide8
Next steps
Agree on possible adjustments to the Agro Portal model to accommodate the non-RDF vocabularies from the VEST
Add the missing VEST vocabularies to the Agro Portal and disable direct registration to the VEST
Review the Agro Portal vocabulary registration process and see if a separate simpler process is necessary for the project (possible to use API to build a different registration form?)Slide9
Further integration: CIARD RING datasets
The
CIARD RING
is a directory of datasets relevant to the field of food and agriculture
Datasets are indexed against several criteria, one of which is the vocabularies that they use
The list of vocabularies comes from the VEST (therefore in the future from the Agro Portal)
All metadata and links of the datasets can be retrieved through SPARQL queries
The Agro Portal could match vocabularies with datasets that use themSlide10
