Leonidas and his 300 warriors (540 B.C. – 480 B.C.) One of the top Greek historical figures who exclaimed the renowned “Come and get it” -“Molon Lave” to the Persians and their leader Xerxis and died fighting with all their strength.

 Alexander the Great (356 B.C.- 323 B.C.) Perhaps the most famous of all the Greeks. His bravery and special abilities helped him in his war expeditions, making Greece one of the greatest lands on Earth. Alexander the Great had a life dream…to stengthen and extend Greek sovereignty. He was a master of the art of war and had a special ability to make everybody respect him and his warriors. He died very young away from his country.

Souliotisses-Naousaies(1803 and 1822) The women from Souli (Souliotisses) and Naousa showed great bravery when they threw themselves – along with their babies- from rocks and were killed instead of giving themselves up to the Turks in 1821.

Kostas Koukidis(1941) A brave evzone who wrapped himself in the Greek flag and fell from the rock of the Acropolis when the German invaders asked him to raise the German flag. Kostas Koukidis was raised in our hometown, Gastouni and a monument to his honour hasbeen  built in

Gastouni.

G. Papanikolaou (1883-1962) A famous Greek doctor who - after experimenting on his own wife - discovered and worked on the gynaecological test for the cancer of the utterus.

The students of the Polytechnio School (1973) The students of the Polytechnio School who rose up first against the Dictatorship in 1973 and rallied citizens round them, making the first step to Freedom and Democracy.

A good number of Greek people were killed or arrested and tortured those days.

Greek National Basketball Team (1997) The Greek National Basketball team played in the European championship in 1987, against giant teams such as the Soviet Union and won the first prize. This inspired many young men to deal with the sport and among them a famous young man Giannis Antetokoumpo.10 Greek Heroes

Kostas Iliakis(2006) Kostas Iliakis was a brave pilot of military aircrafts and was killed during an identifying flight above the Aegean Sea in 2006. A turkish aircraft sent a missile when captain Iliakis refused to leave the scene of his mission and his plane exploded and fell near the island of Karpathos. He is still

honoured by the islanders as a hero.

The Smile of the Child (1995) “The Smile of the Child” is the realization of the dream that little Andreas Giannopoulos had just before he died from cancer. A voluntary organization that covers all needs of kids-orphans, maltreated, abandoned, poor- and also supports all their accommodation, education and medical demands.10 Greek Heroes

Greek Islanders and the three grandmothers (2016) Three very old women from an Aegean island were nominated for the Nobel Prize of peace in 2016, because they (along with most islanders) fed and supported all baby and young refugees that found shelter on their island. 10 Greek Heroes
