In 40 rat models, increased biliary pressure resulted in dilatation, spiderweb-like looping, and interconnected honeycomb-like patterns within the biliary system downstream, midstream, and upstream, respectively.

In 28 patients with biliary atresia, proliferation of the ductules (ie, smallest ductal branches) regressed after successful Kasai portoenterostomy.Obstructive ductular reaction depended on the nutritional support that occurs with increases in arterial supply and the loss of portal blood supply.

Three-dimensional reconstruction of the adaptation of the biliary system in the bile duct ligation model based on phase-contrast CT.
