Health literacy is a broader issue than the issue of literacy. Literate, well-educated individuals can have trouble understanding their medication instructions, treatment options and much more. The need for awareness and adherence to health literacy principles has become a public health concern; in fact, an initial approximation places the cost of low health literacy to the U.S. economy in the range of $106 billion to $238 billion annually. This represents between 7 percent and 17 percent of all personal healthcare expenditures. The challenge represents a massive inefficiency and cost to our national healthcare system.
