Poetry Unit

Basic Terms Stanza: a grouping of lines separated from others in a poem (like a paragraph). Can be significant to meaning. Speaker: The narrator or voice of the poem. Cannot assume it is the same person as the poet.

Rhyme Rhyme Scheme: Pattern of end rhyme labeled with letters of the alphabet. End Rhyme: Rhyming in the final syllable of the line (most common). Internal Rhyme: Word in the middle of a line rhymes with one in the end. Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. “Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door- Only this and nothing more.”

Rhyme Feminine Rhyme : Rhyming of unstressed syllables or words that do not end with a stressed syllable. Ex. Fire/Desire, Meaning/ Gleaning, Reason/ Season Slant Rhyme: Words that sound similar but do not quite rhyme. Ex. Tell/Toll Masculine Rhyme: Rhyming of stressed final syllables Ex. Cat/Mat, Refrain/ Complain, Respect/ Collect Identical Rhyme: Rhyming a word with itself. Monorhyme : One rhyme in a stanza. Eye Rhyme : Rhymes only when a word is spelled, not when pronounced. Ex. Rough/Through

“Because I could not stop for death…” Find as many different examples of rhyme as you can.

On your google doc… Find a poem (any poem) that means something to you. Copy and paste it and answer the following questions. 1. Paraphrase the poem. Put it in your words. 2. What is this poem’s deeper meaning or theme? (no wrong answer) 3. What examples of rhyme do you see (type and line number)?

Rhythm Stress: A syllable uttered in a higher pitch or with greater emphasis than another. Meter: The rhythmical pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. Foot: Unit of measurement in poetry. Includes one stressed and at least one unstressed syllable. Accentual- Syllabic Verse: Verse whose meter is determined by a fixed pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler long I stood And looked down one as far as I could

Rhythm Iamb: A foot consisting of an unaccented syllable followed by an accented syllable ex. Unite, Provide Dactyl: A foot consisting of an accented syllable followed by two unaccented. Ex. poetry Anapest: A foot consisting of two unaccented syllables followed by an accented. Ex. overcome Trochee: An accented syllable followed by an unaccented syllable.

Rhythm Dimeter: A line of two metrical feet. Trimeter : A line of three metrical feet. Tetrameter: A line of four metrical feet. Pentameter: A line of five metrical feet. Hexameter: A line of six metrical feet. Heptameter: A line of seven metrical feet.

Time to write… Pull from the bin and write at least two lines of poetry with your criteria.
