2. What is alcohol?Ethyl alcohol, or ethanol:Is an intoxicating ingredient found in beer, wine, and liquor. Alcohol is produced by the fermentation of yeast, sugars, and starches. Types of alcohol:Beer, Wine and Liquor Reference: National Institute on Drug Abuse

3. Alcohol is a depressant which means it’s a drug that slows down or depresses your brain.

4. Alcohol Use & Health Approx. 80,000 deaths due to excessive alcohol3rd leading lifestyle-related cause of death for the Nation

5. The Effects of Alcohol

6. Effects of AlcoholQuickly affects judgment, vision, concentration, speech and balanceThe more alcohol you have in your body, your judgment worsens & your skills decrease

7. How Does Alcohol Affect the Body?Alcohol a trip through THE HUMAN BODYTHE STOMACH-The first stop for alcohol is the stomach. Unlike food, alcohol does not contain nutrients to build up the body, it acts like an outsider in the body. Eventually the body will get rid of the alcohol, but not until some interesting things happen. First, the stomach starts producing more acid. This may make the person throw up, especially if they are not used to drinking. Next the alcohol is absorbed by the walls of the stomach and it passes into the bloodstream.

8. 2. The Blood Stream The amount of alcohol in a person’ bloodstream is a good way to measure how drunk they are.If a person’s blood is .08 percent alcohol or more, they are considered legally drunk. The bloodstream is like a superhighway system. By hitching a ride with the blood, the alcohol can go just about anywhere. Alcohol is carried by the bloodstream and pushed into tissues and organs. Alcohol can even get inside of cells.Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) is the amount of alcohol in the bloodstream. As more alcohol is consumed the BAC rises.Alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream through the stomach walls and the intestines as a person drinks. The bloodstream carries the alcohol to the brain. A loss of inhibitions is sometimes one of the first effects.

9. 3. The HeartAlcohol makes the heart slow down. People who drink heavily for long periods of time may get high blood pressure. This mean the heart has to work harder to pump blood. It also means there will be a higher risk of heart attack. Hopping back into the blood stream, alcohol is carried quickly to the brain. In fact, the first drink of alcohol will reach the brain in about (30) thirty seconds.

10. The BrainThe brain is the control center for the rest of the body. Alcohol acts like a tranquilizer. It slows down the signals the brain sends to other parts of the body. This causes a person with large amounts of alcohol in the brain to move and talk slowly. Their vision may be blurry as well. The parts of the brain that control a person’s judgment are also affected by alcohol. With all of this going on, it’s no wonder that driving a car while drunk is incredibly dangerous. Alcohol can make a person act differently. A quiet person may become talkative. A talkative person may become quiet. A nice person may become angry and mean

11.

12. The LiverThe liver absorbs the alcohol from the bloodstream like a sponge. But unlike the other organs, the liver can break alcohol down into harmless substances. It uses something called enzymes to convert the alcohol into water and carbon dioxide. This process takes time. While this happening the person may experience a “Hangover”. A typical hangover will include a headache and an upset stomach. This is the end of the line for alcohol in the body , but it is not the end of the story. Breaking down alcohol is very hard on the liver. People who drink large amounts of alcohol may get scars on their liver. This is disease called cirrhosis, and can lead to death.

13. Negative Effects on the BodyWomenMood DisorderFocus on Negative emotionsSmaller body, less tissue for alcohol to absorbIf pregnant, cause fetal alcohol syndromeMenReduces testosterone levels, can lead to lostof libido & reduce sperm quantity & qualityStopping the liver from properly metabolism

14. AdolescentMemory, learning & impulse can be seriously impairedThe brain goes through rapid changes “wiring” during 12-20 years oldSlowing down brain activity & developmentRewiring brains pleasure-reward system which can lead to alcohol dependence/addictionAlcoholism is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, academic failures

15. Damage to society Not only are you damaging yourself when drinking too much alcohol; but once you begin to drink and drive while intoxicated, the risk is higher for car accidents

16. Car Accidents due to DWI1 person is killed every half-hour due to drunk drivingEach yr. approx. 16,000 are killed in alcohol related crashOver 40 % of fatal automobile accidents are alcohol relatedEvery other minute a person is seriously injured in alcohol related crash

17. NM Drunk Driving LawsIllegal=BAC Content of 0.08% or higher90 days in jailAggravated DWI is a BAC 0.16%=Mandatory 48 hours of jail time, on top of chargesMax Fine: $500Crime Lab fee: $65Community fee: $75Corrections fee: $10-20Court Automation fee:$10Other FeesAlcohol ScreeningDWI SchoolCommunity ServiceCounselingIgnition InterlockCourt FeeLICENSE REVOCATION

19. Alcohol’s Effects on Driving AbilityDriving involves multiple tasks, and the demands can change continually. To drive safely, you must maintain alertness, make decision based on ever-changing information present in the environment and execute maneuvers based on decision. Judgment: Ability to think clearly and make quick decisions.People under the influence of alcohol take unnecessary and dangerous risks. Showing off is another example of impaired judgment.Vision: Ability to See Clearly Straight Ahead, to the Side and at Night.Alcohol decrease clearness of vision- relaxed eye muscles. Alcohol causes each eye to get slightly different picture.Reaction time and Coordination: This is the ability to react quickly and safely to an emergency or hazardous situation.Coordination skills to control the car with hands, feet and eyes in response to other vehicles and the road are drastically reduced as alcohol intake increase.Alertness and Concentration: Being ready to changing driving condition

21. Do Not Drink and Drive. Drive Defensively. Drive ResponsiblyThe effect of alcohol is different for everyone. You cannot determine how many drinks will cause a person to become intoxicated. As a matter of fact a person could be legal to drive but not safe to drive after consuming any amount of alcohol. When dealing with alcohol, planning ahead is the best way to ensure the safety of everyone involved.Enforce a Zero- Tolerance policy when it comes to alcohol and the young drivers in your family. Give them the guidance they need to deal with peer pressure and make wise choices.Buckle up for safety, there is no better defense against drunk drivers.

22. SAY NOPeer pressure is someone the same age or in the same grade as you, (friends, classmates) who forces or expects you to do something you don’t want to do. This is why young kids are drinking alcohol because they think they are cool, popular, mature and just because “everyone is doing it.”

23. It can be tempting to try alcoholBut its normal to be curious about new things, especially if everyone is doing it. But everyone is NOT drinking alcoholIt can be hard if you feel unpopular for not drinking alcohol. You are actually more mature and stronger and smarter for not drinking
