Overview

Edited Acoustic & Harmonic Labs for

Phy

1812 and 1814Expanded the text / TroubleshootEasier to understand for non-majorsIncreased physics content Goal: To make labs simple yet entertainingMost students are musicians or recording majors

Labs cont’d…

Helmholtz Resonators

Relationship between frequency and the shape of a container

Vibrating Strings

Explored sound waves using

a string to show waves move

in physical form

Examined waves on a stringFourier Processing of Music Fourier analysis using Audacity

Slide5

Laser Microphone

How it works:

Sound waves inside room cause window to vibrate

Laser bounces off window and back to receiver / photoreceptorReceiver converts back to soundlaser and bounces off of a window  window vibrates due to soundLaser reflection is modified

 Receiver picks up modified sound

Laser Microphone Lab

How we will set up the lab:

Figures below illustrate basic idea

2 week lab to set up laser, and to collect dataPlan to make lab next semester

Acknowledgments

We’d like to thank:

Dr. Brad Conrad for being a pretty cool dude

Dr. Tashakkori for arranging EVERYTHING!!!NSF for providing the “mula”We would like to thank the Physics Department, and Appalachian State University for allowing us to use their facilities.
