Interstellar: The Story Widowed former NASA pilot Cooper (played by Matthew McConaughey) travels in space to discover a solution for the ongoing famine, world disasters, and drought occurring on Earth.

The Making of the Interstellar Story Idea conceived by Lynda Obst and Kip Thorne, who is a theoretical physicist.

Thorne’s Work Based on Thorne’s Work, the duo created the concept of “the most exotic events in the universe suddenly becoming accessible to humans.”

Christopher Nolan and Interstellar -Nolan’s idea was to encourage the goal of human spaceflight within the film. -Nolan’s initial intention was to write a screenplay that would merge with his brother’s screenplay (Jonathan Nolan) -To research the film, Nolan visited NASA as well as the private space program SpaceX

Production Design -Production Designer: Nathan Crowley -Features three spacecraft:The Ranger, The Endurance, and The Lander. -The Endurance was based off of the International Space Station -The two robots featured in the film, CASE and TARS, were controlled by Bill Irwin, who was also the voice of both.

Filming Interstellar -Nolan filmed with anamorphic 35mm and IMAX film. -Cinematographer Hoyt van Hoytema was hired for Interstellar (Nolan’s usual choice for cinematographer, Wally Pfister, was busy working on his directorial debut, Transcendence )

Visual Effects -The visual effects company that was involved with Interstellar was Double Negative.-Visual Effects Supervisor: Paul Franklin -The effects were created first so the digital projectors could be used to display the effects behind the actors, rather than using green screens.

Composer- Hans Zimmer -Zimmer, previously scoring Nolan’s Batman trilogy, teamed up with Nolan once again for Interstellar . -Instead of giving Zimmer a script to start from, Nolan gave him one page of text about the film to reference. -Zimmer conducted 45 scoring sessions for this film. (three times more than Inception ) Music

Interstellar’s Influences Director Nolan said that the main influences of this film were notable key Science Fiction films such as Metropolis (1927) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).
