John F. Kennedy Space Program – The USSR successfully launched a satellite (Sputnik) and a person into space; the USA then became committed to a space program (goal was to get a man to walk on the moon by the end of the 1960s); 1962 John Glenn became first person to orbit the earth ; 1969 Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.

John F. Kennedy Peace Corps -- This program sent thousands of volunteers to developing nations to train people in technical, educational, and health programs

John F. Kennedy Bay of Pigs Invasion – In 1961 American-trained Cuban exiles attempted to retake the island from communist forces; they were unsuccessful and did not receive backup from the US military; JFK was left embarrassed

John F. Kennedy Cuban Missile Crisis - In October 1962, the Soviet Union began installing nuclear missiles on Cuba (90 miles off the coast of the USA); President Kennedy would not tolerate this; after a two-week stand-off, the Soviets abandoned the idea and the Americans removed ICBMs from Turkey.

Lyndon Johnson Democrat 1963-1969

Lyndon Johnson Great Society – President Johnson’s domestic policy; he wanted to expand the New Deal (provide a bigger safety net and wage a war on poverty); it included Medicare, HUD, Food Stamps)

Lyndon Johnson Gulf of Tonkin Resolution – President Johnson was given (by Congress) the ability to protect American intetrests in Vietnam (provided a “blank check” and allowed the war to be fought without a formal declaration of war)

Lyndon Johnson Tet Offensive – In January 1968 (during a cease-fire) communist forces launched a coordinated attack against the Americans in South Vietnam; the offensive was put down, but news of the attack made the Americans feel that we were not winning the war.

Richard Nixon Vietnamization – turning the war effort over to the local people; Nixon wanted to leave Vietnam (“Peace with honor”)

Richard Nixon Pentagon Papers – Documents were published in the NY Times that revealed that the USA had been involved in war in Vietnam a lot longer than the public realized; Nixon was upset that these documents were being published; the Supreme Court upheld freedom of speech because our national security was not threatened

Richard Nixon War Powers Act – This law was passed over Nixon’s veto in 1973; it prevents Presidents from wagin g another undeclared war (like Vietnam) because they must return to Congress for approval to use the military without a formal declaration of war

Richard Nixon SALT – (Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty) part of a policy of détente, the US and USSR set limits on the number of defensive missile sites and strategic offensive missiles each nation would keep

Richard Nixon 26 th Amendment – lowered the voting age from 21 to 18
