Malfunctions
Abnormal functioning of the immune system
Two types of problems:
Immunodeficiency diseases
Inappropriate attacks of the immune system against non-threatening agents.Slide3
Immunodeficiency diseases
May be caused by a foreign agent
HIV (attacks T cells)
Hereditary condition (e.g. SCID – severe combined immunodeficiency): gene mutation resulting in the inability to produce B and T cells
Cancer treatments or prolonged exposure to anti-inflammatory drugs (cortisol) reduce the effectiveness of the immune system.Slide4
Inappropriate immune responses
Allergies (hypersensitivity to harmless agents)
Response in which the immune system attacks normal cells in one’s own body (autoimmune disease) – can destroy tissues and organs.
