Slide6Enterprise ModelWhat is the enterprise model?
Unity’s Enterprise Education Model is an operational structure. It functions similarly to state college systems, which have different universities and services that function independently and use centralized services.
Slide7Enterprise ModelUnity College adopted an Enterprise Education model
in 2017 as our organizational structure. Within this model, work units are organized under Functional Areas, and Units are either centralized or decentralized.Centralized Units provide shared services that are integrated and consistent College-wide.
Decentralized Units
offer differentiated services that are unique to each Sustainable Educational Business Unit (SEBU).

Slide19Role, Scope, Authority of DE VP: SummaryTraditional VP: The decisions are typically spread between a bunch of VPs so no one responsible. Decisions are made in isolation that could impact a different area.
VPDE:Oversees all of the decentralized decisions/functions; Can focus on student audience without compromising other audiences Checks and balanced by centralized functions. Works closely with Chiefs who are responsible for all centralized functions.Decisions are made with interdepartmental information and oversight.
Slide20How Decisions are MadeDecision Making in DE ultimately rolls up to the VP and the President. Unit Heads make decisions within their units and escalate/communicate as necessary (clearly defined in RSA).
Recommendations for decisions go through two committees.(versus decisions themselves being made via committee)
Slide21Decision Making: Stakeholder Input

Slide24So, What Does DE Do Different from traditional higher education?Almost Everything….
Slide25A Few Take-Aways:Curriculum and academic planning involves Advisors, Instructional Designers, Faculty, Deans to create the best student experience.
We focus on Experiential Online Experiences!Traditional Higher Ed: Faculty advise, design courses, and work mostly in isolation. Only available for work part of the year vs year round. Deans do not approve all courses.Recruitment works closely with Advisors, Deans, and Academics. Speed to Lead. Understanding programs and what students are looking for.Traditional Higher Ed
: Do not collaborate with academics; College Fairs; Mailings.
One-stop-shop Concierge Services and Advising for superb student support.
Traditional Higher Ed
: Students are sent to multiple departments for answers. No one person is ultimately responsible for that student’s experience.
Deans responsible for revenue within their programmatic areas.
Traditional Higher Ed
: Deans (and even VPs) job performance is not linked to revenue or program performance.
Slide26Unity College has defined centralized and decentralized functions to clearly define role, scope, and authority. Revenue is responsibility of entire SEBU with support from enterprise functions.Traditional Higher Ed: Work in isolation; Revenue only admissions/development.
Definition of Faculty is very different than traditional with a focus on subject matter expertise and scholarship. Work year round and available throughout.Traditional Higher Ed: Faculty conduct academic advising, course design, scholarship, and teaching, and often do not excel at all aspects of that job. Role of committees is streamlined to function as advisory and recommendation bodies to VP as needed. Traditional Higher Ed: Multiple committees are established for discussing decisions often resulting in slow progress and change.
Clear decision making from VPDE/President with input from stakeholders.
Traditional Higher Ed
: VPs work in isolated functional units; Decisions are made without information from other units; Decisions made via committees.
