Benchmark: What is a concession?

A concession is acknowledging that there is another side.

Although A

, B because CA= Concession/CounterclaimB because C = ClaimIt helps strengthen your argument and should be in every argument essay you write.

What does it look like?Since my thesis example stated the American Dream is a myth, my concession has to acknowledge that it may actually exist for some people. You can use one of the articles to help you write a concession paragraphSlide4

Example Thesis Statement

Although many think The Great Gatsby shows the triumph of the American Dream, it actually reinforces the idea that it is difficult to move between social classes because wealth is not evenly distributed or respected, making it impossible to emulate a rags to riches story.

What is a refutation?

A refutation is where you prove the counter-arguments wrong or, at the very least, explain why you do not agree with it

.

Why do it?You have to bring your essay back to your point…your argument… a concession should be immediately followed by a refutation. It usually exists within the same paragraph. What does it look like when combined with a concession? For some the American Dream is a reality. Some people are able to come to America, work hard and become wealthy. If you look at Horatio Alger, he was a sickly little boy who went on to write countless stories. Millions of young children read his stories and believed in his characters. (Insert quote) (insert analysis) However, he was only professionally successful. No records indicate he ever made millions off his stories.

We know we are reading the refutation when we read a trigger word that shows opposition, such as however or butSlide6
