Due to economic inequality caused by segregation, minorities are more likely to not be able to afford a poll taxSlide4

Originally called for by JFK, but he was assassinated before it came into law
His successor LBJ pushed the bill through
Was made to outlaw discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin
Created the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to ensure employers followed this rule
In recent years, the EEOC has expanded who is protected under the Civil Rights Act to include those of different sexualities and gendersSlide5

Outlawed discrimination at public facilities (i.e. hotels, restaurants, theaters, etc.)
Outlawed discrimination at government facilities
