noticed the swooping roofline, a gentle upside down arch, and mused that workersmight have made a mistake.ÒEverybody says that,Ó said Mike Harvey, site superintendent overseeing theconstruction of a new $6.9 million church at the corner of Erb and Caroline streets.ÒWe call it the smile,Ó he said.And yes, he added, the roof of the new Knox Presbyterian Church will have rooftopdrains to clear away rainwater.In the past few weeks the huge hole in the ground beside the existing red-brick Knoxchurch has given way to the wooden skeleton and skin of the new 24,000 square-footbuilding.The old brick church, adjacent to the construction site, is a hodgepodge of buildingsconstructed in 1927, 1957 and 1973. It has been built on seven different levels, so itwould have needed two elevators to make it entirely accessible for physicallyhandicapped parishioners.It would have cost about $3 million to upgrade and renovate.So the congregation voted to start with a clean slate. Once the new building on thechurchÕs former parking lot is completed, the old church will be demolishe

Linda Ashfield, one of KnoxÕs two ministers, said the congregationÕs pastors andelders are already talking about programs that can be run out of the new building.One of the main advantages of the new church, she said, is that it will enable the Knox feels historically connected to the Waterloo core, she said.And when the building is completed, Ashfield said the congregation plans to open thebuilding to the community for public celebrations.At this point, it seems, the congregation has got the communityÕs attention.Ashfield said a Knox parishioner was recently sitting across the street watching theconstruction.A stranger came alongside and struck up a conversation about the work in progress.Their talk turned into a 20-minute conversation about the worldwide Christian church
