5. Background: Global Citizenship Education as part of SDGsIn 2015, the UN formally adopted 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), described by Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon as “a universal, integrated, and transformative vision for a better world.”* UN Sustainable Development Goal 4Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.Target 4.7 By 2020, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture's contribution to sustainable development*http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=51968#.WFgPO-Tz4vY

6. Background: Global Citizenship Education as part of SDGsGlobal citizenship education (GCED) was included in the SDGs as a result of the advocacy of educators for several decades. Global Education First Initiative (GEFI), launched by the UN Secretary General in 2012, put quality, relevant, and transformative education at the heart of social, political, and development agendas, this included education that fostered global citizenship.Development Education, is an earlier term, which according to Douglas Bourn, “emerged in the 1970s within the framework of initiatives by Northern based governments and International Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) to raise public awareness, understanding and support for international development.” As a term, “it has a number of different interpretations, from awareness-raising about global poverty to learning about development issues to a framework for broader learning that has an active, change component.” **http://www.sinergiased.org/index.php/revista/item/51-douglas-bourn-what-is-meant-by-development-education

7. The notion of GCED was already in the Delors Report (1996) or “Learning: The Treasure Within”. The Report was submitted to UNESCO by the International Commission on Education for the Twenty-first Century, chaired by Jacques Delors, former European Commission President. It advocated for an integrated vision of education based on two key concepts, 'learning throughout life' and the four pillars of learning, namely, to know, to do, to be and to live together.Similar to the Faure Report (1972) called “Learning to Be”, the Delors Report continues to be a key reference for the conceptualization of education and learning worldwide.Access: https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000109590Background: Global Citizenship Education as part of SDGs
