irst Census

2

The first Census took place in 1790.

3.9 million people were counted.

Slide3

What

The Census is a count of everyone living in the United States.

3

Slide4

Who

All U.S. residents are counted

– regardless of citizenship.

4

Slide5

Why

The U.S. Constitution requires a Census every 10 years to ensure that

each community gets the right number of representatives in

government.

5

Slide6

When

The U.S. Census Bureau will mail invitations to most

households in

mid-March.

You are required

to complete your form by April 1.

6

Slide7

Where

All people living in Volusia County at least six months of the year should complete their census forms in Volusia County.

This includes college students and snowbirds.

7

Slide8

How

In 2020, for the first time, people will be able to complete their Census form

online, by phone, or by mail

.

8

Slide9

Why should you participate?

It’s quick and easy.

It’s confidential

.

It’s important.

It provides funding.

You won’t get a

knock on your door!

9

Slide10

It’s quick and easy

The 2020 Census form asks seven simple questions, including age, sex, Hispanic origin, race, relationship, phone number and homeowner status.

10

Slide11

It’s confidential

Census forms are confidential for 72 years and cannot be shared with anyone, including welfare, immigration and

law enforcement agencies.

11

Slide12

It’s important

The federal government will use data to:

Determine the number of seats

each state has in the U.S.

House of Representatives.

Establish state legislative

districts

12

Slide13

It provides funding

Data will affect how more than

$675 billion

in federal funds will be distributed. These funds are used for schools, hospitals, roads,

bridges, affordable

housing programs,

disaster assistance,

transportation,

and much more.

13

Slide14

Local impacts

Volusia County, cities and schools receive tens

of millions

of dollars in

federal and state funds each year for

population based programs that address affordable housing and homelessness.

14

The county

also

receives

funding for

Votran

,

gas taxes

and sales taxes

.
