We know more about the physical bodyhow it begins how it responds to illness even how it decomposesthan ever before Yet not all bodies are created equal some bodies clearly count more than others and some bodies are not recognized at all In Missing Bodies Monica J Casper and Lisa Jean Moore explore the surveillance manipulations erasures and visibility of the body in the twentyfirst century The authors examine bodies both actual and symbolic in a variety of arenas pornography fashion sports medicine photography cinema sex work labor migration medical tourism and war This new politics of visibility can lead to the overexposure of some bodiesLance Armstrong Jessica Lynchand to the near invisibility of othersdead Iraqi civilians illegal immigrants the victims of HIVAIDS and natural disastersMissing Bodies presents a call for a new engaged way of seeing and recovering bodies in a world that routinely often strategically obscures or erases them It poses difficult even startling questions Why did it take so long for the United States media to begin telling stories about the falling bodies of 911 Why has the United States government refused to allow photographs or filming of flagdraped coffins carrying the bodies of soldiers who are dying in Iraq Why are the bodies of girls and women so relentlessly sexualized By examining the cultural politics at work in such disappearances and inclusions of the physical body the authors show how the social medical and economic consequences of visibility can reward or undermine privilege in society. 9 Workwear9.1 also promotes and reflects Harsco Standards Development “University”. Description of Assessment. When sociologist Georgiann Davis was a teenager, her doctors discovered that she possessed XY chromosomes, marking her as intersex. Rather than share this information with her, they withheld the diagnosis in order to “protect” the development of her gender identity it was years before Davis would see her own medical records as an adult and learn the truth. Davis’ experience is not unusual. Many intersex people feel isolated from one another and violated by medical practices that support conventional notions of the male/female sex binary which have historically led to secrecy and shame about being intersex. Yet, the rise of intersex activism and visibility in the US has called into question the practice of classifying intersex as an abnormality, rather than as a mere biological variation. This shift in thinking has the potential to transform entrenched intersex medical treatment. In Contesting Intersex, Davis draws on interviews with intersex people, their parents, and medical experts to explore the oft-questioned views on intersex in medical and activist communities, as well as the evolution of thought in regards to intersex visibility and transparency. She finds that framing intersex as an abnormality is harmful and can alter the course of one’s life. In fact, controversy over this framing continues, as intersex has been renamed a ‘disorder of sex development’ throughout medicine. This happened, she suggests, as a means for doctors to reassert their authority over the intersex body in the face of increasing intersex activism in the 1990s and feminist critiques of intersex medical treatment. Davis argues the renaming of ‘intersex’ as a ‘disorder of sex development’ is strong evidence that the intersex diagnosis is dubious. Within the intersex community, though, disorder of sex development terminology is hotly disputed some prefer not to use a term which pathologizes their bodies, while others prefer to think of intersex in scientific terms. Although terminology is currently a source of tension within the movement, Davis hopes intersex activists and their allies can come together to improve the lives of intersex people, their families, and future generations. However, for this to happen, the intersex diagnosis, as well as sex, gender, and sexuality, needs to be understood as socially constructed phenomena. A personal journey into medical and social activism, Contesting Intersex presents a unique perspective on how medical diagnoses can affect lives profoundly. What does it mean for Black women to organize in a political context that has generally ignored them or been unresponsive although Black women have shown themselves an important voting bloc? How for example, does #sayhername translate into a political agenda that manifests itself in specific policies? Shadow Bodies focuses on the positionality of the Black woman’s body, which serves as a springboard for helping us think through political and cultural representations. It does so by asking: How do discursive practices, both speech and silences, support and maintain hegemonic understandings of Black womanhood thereby rendering some Black women as shadow bodies, unseen and unremarked upon? Grounded in Black feminist thought, Julia S. Jordan-Zachery looks at the functioning of scripts ascribed to Black women’s bodies in the framing of HIV/AIDS, domestic abuse, and mental illness and how such functioning renders some bodies invisible in Black politics in general and Black women’s politics specifically.
