Slide22Body Paragraph Example
Mary
Warren is a weak-minded person whose decisions throughout the play were made based on fear and blind obedience.
As a young Puritan girl, her religion has shaped her beliefs and therefore, her actions; however, in all of what she does she is driven by fear of consequence and retaliation.
When Judge Danforth questions why she thought she saw spirits that she did not actually see Mary replies, “I—I cannot tell how, but I did. I—I heard the other girls screaming, and you, you seemed to believe them, and I—It were only sport in the beginning, sir, but then the whole world cried spirits, spirits, and I…” (Crucible.2.43-44).
Mary knew that the other girls were frauds but continued imitating them despite the harm she was causing those on trial. Mary followed the other girls without making her own decisions and harmed others because of self-preservation, which demonstrates a weakness in one’s character
.
Even without Abigail leading the other girls, Mary Warren would marry and lead a continued life of meek obedience because of simple-minded weakness.
