History of Animal Control Services in Alamance County

~ 1965/70

:

Burlington Animal Shelter was built in Haw River

Up to ~1990

: The City of Burlington also operated the Alamance County Animal Shelter, which was located in Graham. ~ 1991: Burlington Animal Shelter in Haw River was renovated and expanded. Sheltering operations at the Graham facility were discontinued. 2004: The Pet Adoption Center was constructed to house adoptable animals and reduce euthanasiaSlide4

2016-2018 New Animal Services Center!

The expansion/ renovation of the existing adoption center will bring all animal services activities under one roof, and replace the old shelter/intake building with updated, modern animal facilities.

Funding for the new facility is a collaborative effort between the City of Burlington, Alamance County and PAWS. PAWS is a 501 c(3) organization that is spearheading private fundraising efforts for the new Animal Services Facility.

The Pet Adoption Center opened its doors in April 2004 as a result of a partnership between the City of Burlington, Alamance County and the Pet Adoption Welfare Society. This facility was built to increase adoptions and reduce euthanasia.

At the adoption center there are 20 primary enclosures for dogs and 20 for cats.

Animal

Shelter/ Intake FacilitySlide7

The shelter facility has a total of 32 primary enclosures for dogs or “runs” and an additional 8 cages for small dogs.

Animal Services receives and houses about

2,300 dogs

annually.

That’s approximately

190 dogs per month

!

The ShelterSlide8

There are a total of 35 primary enclosures for cats. Animal Services Receives and houses approximately 3,000

cats annually

.

That’s

250 cats per month

!

The ShelterSlide9

Approximately

1/5 of

the shelter facility that was not originally designed for animals has

been converted to

accommodate animal enclosures due to the lack of adequate kennel space for the number of animals received.Slide10

The amount of animal holding space

in the existing facility is critically inadequate,

despite

overall declining

intake numbers.

The average length of stay for all animals is 12 days.

Intakes at animal services began declining after the low-cost spay/neuter clinic began operations in 2010

Increased

efforts towards

spay/ neuter of community pets, increased focus on safety-net and pet retention programs are some important activities that our communities’ animal welfare agencies are focusing on that will continue to support declining shelter intakes.Slide12

Information about every pet at Animal Services is uploaded to the website when the pet is admitted, and automatically updated hourly. Invaluable resource for individuals that live far away and are interested in adopting and/or can’t visit Animal Services

during open hours to look for a pet. Especially helpful for owners of lost pets that cannot visit in person everyday.
