STUDY GUIDE Wave Properties, Interactions, and Sound Waves: Transcript
REMINDER DONT FORGET TO STUDY Electromagnetic waves Mechanical waves Interference Reflection Refraction Pitch diagrams 1 Define the following words Crest the highest part of a transverse wave. By Rhett Price. Speed of Sound . Speed of sound depends on density. Correlation between speed and density. Not as fast as light speed. Also affected by pressure and temperature. Positive correlation between them. Students . will explore the wave nature of sound and electromagnetic radiation. . Identify . the characteristics of electromagnetic and . mechanical waves. . . b. Describe how the behavior of light waves . Doppler Effect. ~apparent change in frequency of a wave due to the motion of the source of the wave.. If the object is moving towards the observer the frequency will appear to increase. If the object is moving away from the observer the frequency will appear to decrease. T. ypes of wave interactions. Reflection. Refraction. Diffraction. Interference. Reflection. The bouncing back of a wave when it hits a surface.. * NOTE: When waves hits a substance some of it is transmitted and some of it is reflected.. An old riddle ….. If a tree falls in a forest, and no one hears it, does the tree make a sound?. What is “sound”?. Sound Waves. To a scientist, a tree makes a sound whether someone hears it or not.. Wave Properties. There are 6 main properties, or interactions, of waves that occur when a wave comes in contact with another wave , or a boundary. . The 6 Interactions of waves are. Interference. Diffraction. Waves transfer energy!. A wave does not carry matter . It only moves matter as it travels through it.. Waves. Compression (longitudinal) waves . are waves in which the particles of the medium move in a direction . Producing and Detecting sound. What is sound?. The sound you hear is sound waves that can only travel through matter.. Sound waves are longitudinal waves. . Sources of sound. Every sound comes from a vibration, which is the energy that the wave uses to carry the sound.. Transverse Wave . Clickers! . What does a wave carry? . Energy . Matter. Particles . Atoms . Mechanical Waves . Electromagnetic Waves . Clickers! . A transverse wave travels _______ to the direction of the wave’s motion. . Remain as quiet as you can for 1 minute.. I will tell you when to begin, and when to stop.. In the margin of your paper, write down all of the different sounds that you hear in the environment around you.. Before the waves are made the particles are same distance apart. While waves moves through the medium the particles . compress. together, then they spread further apart (stretched areas)- . rarefaction.. Sound is a . longitudinal. . (Mechanical)wave caused by a . vibrating. object. Molecules . collide. , producing sound. Examples: . Vocal chords. , guitar or piano strings, tuning fork, etc.. . Longitudinal Wave. Wave. Repeating disturbance or movement. Carries energy through matter and space. Vibrations. Anything that moves in a rhythmic patter. Up and down. Back and forth. What is a Wave. All waves are produced when something vibrates. 2022-2023 Season. Russ Burleson. geaux15@hotmail.com. . 1. Agenda. Binder Check/Homework review. Mechanical Wave overview. Transverse Waves. Surface Waves. Longitudinal Waves (general). Sound Waves (Longitudinal).
