Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection - Summer 2019 Internships Mellon Museum Internship Program The Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection is seeking two highly motivated undergraduate students, preferably in the field of anthropology, art history, global development studies, or studio art, to serve as interns for Summer 2019, one in Collections and one in Education. Both positions require 30 hrs/week for 10 weeks (or 300 total hours over the summer.) Interns will receive a stipend of $3500 to offset the cost of living during the internship period. COLLECTIONS INTERNSHIP The Collections Intern will receive hands-on training in the digitization, documentation, and research of museum collections. Research and writing skills are required for this position; digital photography and experience using Adobe Photoshop preferred. The intern will work directly with the Collection Manager on the following projects, which will ensure the proper documentation and registration of objects in the Kluge-Ruhe Collection, providing physical and virtual access to students and researchers: • Assess and document objects • Aid in the rehousing of small objects in the collection • Digitize objects (digital photography, image processing, embedding metadata) • Conduct object-based and policy-related research • Assist in editing collections database records for online collections search • Additionally, the intern will assist with office duties (mailings, answering phone) and other tasks necessary to running a small museum such as helping with exhibitions and special programs. EDUCATION INTERNSHIP The Education Intern will receive hands-on training in the educational programming of a museum. Research and writing skills are required for this position; previous museum or gallery experience is preferred. The intern will work directly with the Education and Program Coordinator on the following projects, which will ensure the Kluge-Ruhe Collection meets its mission of educating the public about Australian Indigenous art and culture: • Plan and implement educational programs to various audiences and age groups • Market the programs on social media and web platforms • Assist when needed in the development of programs to support exhibitions • Assist when needed with visitor services and volunteer management This internship presents a unique opportunity for a student to have hands-on experience working with the Kluge-Ruhe Collection st

The intern will learn about museum programming from idea to evaluation, the use of Understanding by Design as a model for museum education, and basic marketing for museum programming. As an outcome of this placement, the intern will create a portfolio of projects that will serve him or her in future career opportunities. ELIGIBILITY Applications are open to rising 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year UVA students from all fields of study with a demonstrated interest in Indigenous Arts/Studies.
