Goals and

objectivesEducation is a tool that states use to develop ‘good

citizens

’, but how

do regional host states integrate refugees in their national curriculum? How can we best support refugee children and their communities to build durable futures, when it is unclear where those futures will be?What national, private and civil society initiatives exist to provide education, and what is the role of diasporas and virtual learning spaces?

Slide4

What

we intend to do

We focus on two of the largest populations of refugees:

Syrians

and SomalisWe will conduct fieldwork in cities and refugee camps in Lebanon and Kenya, as well as in Somalia with individuals who returned from KenyaWe will observe classroom interaction, conduct interviews with pupils and teachers, and follow the ‘Day in the Life’ protocol

Slide5

Anticipated

resultsWe expect to find out:What different forms of education are provided to refugees

How these contribute to ‘durable futures’ for individuals and communities – sustainable livelihoods, social inclusion, creating ‘responsible political citizens’

The project will create:

An innovative digital contribution to curricula for refugee education, in the form of educational comics on refugee experiences and other social justice issues6 policy briefs and an international policy conference on refugee education

Slide6

How policy makers and practitioners

can use our

results

We will create a

Community of Practice, which at this point includes UNHCR, GPE, Save the Children, IRC, Jusoor, WUSC and NCAWe will work with: simulations, conversation prompts, case-based discussions and transnational mentoring partnerships – to create sustainable interactions and collaborative learningPLEASE EXPRESS YOUR INTEREST – cindy@prio.org
