Enhance Driver Safety by means of Feedback

Some road users, such as motorcycle drivers, are

extremely vulnerable. The investment in a safer road infrastructure has hardly reduced the number of accidents with motorcycle drivers90 percent of all motorcycle accidents fall in one of two categories: (1) a car driver not noticing the motorcyclist and hitting him (about 60%), and (2) a motorcyclist losing control in a corner (about 30 %).

To enhance their own safety, motorcycle drivers should change their driving behavior:Adopt a defensive driving strategy in which the motorcyclist anticipates on the car driver not noticing himAdopt a safe cornering strategy

Both countermeasures can be achieved by giving the motorcyclist feedback about his/her behavior:Where does he/she directs his/her gaze?Horizontal scanning at cross-roads and junctions.Looking far down the roadCornering gaze strategy (“You hit what you look at!”) What are the safety-relevant parameters of his/her motorcycle’s motorcycleSmoothness (enhances traction)There exists an optimal cornering strategy with respect to speed and lean angle

For all safety-relevant parameters (driver’s gaze, motorcycle’s speed and lean angle) sensors exist, and are currently used in research and industrial settings. This sensor technology can be brought to the motorcycle community and used in a training and self-training contextThis technology is essential for research on the behavioral aspects of road user safety (motorcycle and others)
