Solving 2-Step Equations

Algebraic equations are solved backwards, so do the OPPOSITE math!

Since there are more than 1 steps to do you must follow the Order of Operations…but BACKWARDS!!!

Add/Subtract 1

st

Multiply/Divide 2

nd

Slide4

3y – 8 = 7

+ 8 +8

3y = 15

/3 /3

y = 5

1

st

ADD 8 to both sides so he cancels out!

2

nd

DIVIDE by 3 to both sides so he cancels out!

Now the y is alone and you can plug the answer back in to CHECK your work!Slide5

9 + 6b = 51

-9 -9

6b = 42

/6 /6

b = 7

1

st

SUBTRACT 9 to both sides so he cancels out!

2

nd

DIVIDE by 6 to both sides so he cancels out!

Now the y is alone and you can plug the answer back in to CHECK your work!Slide6

y/2 + 2 = 10

-2 -2

y/2 = 8

x 2 x 2

y = 16

1

st

SUBTRACT 2 to both sides so he cancels out!

2

nd

MULTIPLY by 2 to both sides so he cancels out!

Now the y is alone and you can plug the answer back in to CHECK your work!Slide7

1.8 + 7s = 15.8

-1.8 - 1.8

7s = 14.0

/ 7 / 7

s = 2

1

st

SUBTRACT 1.8 from both sides so he cancels out!

2

nd

DIVIDE by 7 to both sides so he cancels out!

Now the y is alone and you can plug the answer back in to CHECK your work!
