To understand the need for Utility Software

To be able to describe the purpose of

‒Encryption Software

‒Defragmentation

‒Data Compression

To understand the role and methods of backup

‒Full

‒IncrementalSlide3

What is Utility Software?

Utility programs are designed to do just one or two tasks.

Utility software interacts with the computer's hardware.

‒E.g. the Disk Drive,

Utility programs are inbuilt into the Operating System.Slide4

Examples of what Utility Software does

•Disk Defragmentation

•File Repair

•Disk Encryption

•Disk Formatting

•Disk Backup / Restore

•Anti-VirusSlide5

Encryption

File or disk with a password is scrambled into “gibberish”, with the correct password it can then be unscrambled and turned back into the original file. Slide6

Student Task - Slides 15 & 16

Your task is to apply some basic principals of encryption, you have been some encrypted text and key to decrypt it.

Defragmenting Explained (Just incase)

Normal HDD with Data

Normal HDD with files deleted

After defragmentationSlide10

Student Task - Paired Work

Working with a partner you are going to create a Google Slides presentation on the following topics:

Defragmentation Software

Compression (You covered this before when we looked at binary)

Backups

Your presentation must be written entirely in your own words, include images/diagrams to help explain things and at least 2 questions you can ask your audience to check their understanding!Slide11

Student Task - Paired Work

Questions you must cover/answer in your presentation are:

What is compression?

What is the difference between lossy & lossless compression?

Why do we compress files?

What is defragmenting?

How does defragmenting work?

What is the benefit of defragging a HDD?

What are the differences between a full/incremental backup of a computer?

What are the potential consequences of not backing up?

How can you backup a mobile phone?

You should attach your finished presentation to Google Classroom System software assignment.

Don’t forget you have to include at least 2 questions to ask your audience!Slide12

Presentations:

Text AND Pictures

At least 2 slides for each part.

(Why is it important? What’s the consequences of not using it?)

Questions (throughout or at the end)
