Monticello Little League
I played baseball at Monticello Little League in Charlottesville, VA from the age of 7 till 12.
I had a great time and loved all the people involved in the league, so I decided to give back and volunteer umpire during the Spring of my Senior year of high school.Slide3
I umpired the minor league (ages 9-10) with a friend of mine. The woman in charge of the umpires worked at the elementary school I went to and was very appreciative of me and my friend.
My friend was the field umpire and I worked behind the plate, calling balls and strikes.
We had a great time getting to know some of the players and coaches that we umpired more often than others.Slide4
Since we were volunteer umps with no training or previous umpiring experience, we were not going to get every call right, and most coaches, players, and families understood that
.
However, one team’s coaches and families did not understand this. They would get very upset and yell at my friend and I any time we would make a call they didn’t agree with.
This taught me to be confident, poised, and not to give in and call things in that team’s favor in fear of them getting upset.Slide5
Despite a few rough games, I had a very positive experience volunteer umpiring and am very glad I did it.
I had a lot of fun and it felt good to give back to the little league that gave me so much when I was younger.
I saw myself in some of the children playing and hope that they, too, one day will give back to the league in some way.
