History Of Women’s Figure Skating

Figure skating dates back to prehistoric times. It was the first winter sport to be introduced to the summer Olympics. In 1908 in London, England

The founder of modern figure skating is an American man by the name of Jackson Haines. Jackson won the first Championships of America held in in 1864. He was also known to be the first person who incorporated dance and ballet movements into regular skating. Jackson also invented a blade made for figure skating. History of Figure Skating At first, only men were allowed to compete in figure skating, but in 1902 a women entered the world figure skating championships. This was not approved of and they banned women from competing against men. In 1906, a separate event for ladies was established.

Women’s figure skating was the first winter sport introduced to the Olympics in 1908 Figure skating was part of the summer Olympics in 1908 and 1920 At first, only men were allowed to compete in figure skating, but in 1902 a women entered the world figure skating championships. It’s the competitive sport of ice skating in prescribed patterns ( figures ) and choreographed free skating . The first skates were made of flattened bone that was strapped to the bottom of the foot. This years favorites were: Gracie Gold (USA) Ashley Wagner (USA) Yuna Kim (South Korea) Mao Asada (Japan) Carolina Kostner (Italy)

Women originally could only wear dresses but now have a choice between them or trousers. If they choose to wear a dress, they must wear matching, attached briefs. Figure Skating Wear

Pairs- Kirsten Moore - Towers and her partner Dylan Moscovitch from Canada placed fifth Men’s figure skating- Patrick Chan placed second, receiving a silver medal. Women’s Figure Skating- The women did not place within the top five. Canada came fourth over all in the figure skating portion of the Olympics C A N A D A
