Idaho in FY 2016

$23 Million

EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN IDAHO

Managing Idaho’s Landscapes for Ecosystem Systems is a collaborative project between Idaho State University, Boise State University, and University of Idaho to understand the effects of mid-sized cities and climate on ecosystem services over time and space.

University of Idaho is ranked 45 out of 100 top universities for expenditures in science and engineering R&D.1’Idaho ranks 3rd nationally for the number of patents issued per S&E worker.1Idaho ranks 4th nationally for the number of nuclear engineers they employ within this field.2

INVESTMENT IN NSF = INVESTMENT IN IDAHO INNOVATION

The concentration of R&D jobs in Idaho is 3.2 times greater than the national average.

2Boise State University received $37 million in research money in 2009, a 32% increase from 2008.380% of Boise State University research is federally funded.3

Boise State University researchers are developing a novel sensor to detect hydrogen gas in storage vessels which can lead to better semiconducting sensor technology.

University of Idaho researchers are examining how millions of hectares of dead evergreen trees from bark beetle outbreaks reduce long term carbon storage and can lead to higher CO

concentration in the atmosphere.

THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF

)

is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering.

Our research mission has supported the economic progress of Idaho and the world for more than 100 years

Every day, our talented faculty and students contribute insight into ideas that matter for Idaho, in everything from wildfire management to

cybersecurity.”− Chuck Staben, President, University of Idaho

University of Idaho researchers have teamed up with high school teachers who serve large populations of Native American and Latino students to bring climate science into the classroom. Over 500 kids have participated in Climate Adventures, a hands on experience that teaches them about the local impacts of climate change.

Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF)

www.cnsfweb.orgThe Community Center Afterschool Program model is being piloted by researchers from Boise State University. This program will offer hands-on science activities and computation for 4-6th graders at high need, Title I community centers. This program will bring together university students pursuing a teaching degree with in-service teachers from schools around Boise to focus on student learning and teacher professional development.

Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships.

Idaho received

$7 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016.“…we’ve been given a heady responsibility – to reach into an unknown future by touching the lives of those we meet in the classroom and across campus. We help shape their destinies and the fate of our nation and planet in a way few on this earth have a chance to do.”

EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN IDAHO

THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. The University of Idaho researchers and students offer extended mentoring to Native American students through the HOIST (Helping Orient Indian Students and Teachers) program. HOIST provides an opportunity for Native American youths to gain research experience and take college preparatory English and math classes, while encouraging these next generation youths to pursue higher education within STEM fields.
