Session Intro AmeriCorps wants every member to have a successful term of service, however we realize that challenges exist that may prevent some from earning an education award. While you cannot plan for every possible member issue that arises, you can build a framework that supports members without compromising your overall program objectives. Planning for member success begins well before any member shows up to start serving. 3 important keys to member success are: Structures Expectations Consistency AMERICORPS STATE AND NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

3 Keys Structures – include program policies and procedures, trainings, supervision, days of service, requesting feedback, etc. Expectations – Clearly documenting and communicating what is required, what is expected, what is not allowed and consequences. Consistency – No surprises in how policies will be applied or decisions made, do what you say you will do AMERICORPS STATE AND NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

Structures to Aid Member Success How do you prepare your staff/tribal partners for member arrival? What type of training do they receive in order to manage and supervise members? How often do you and your staff review your policies and procedures to determine if changes or updates are required? When recruiting members, how direct are you with potential applicants about program expectations? What do you share with them before they apply? How is this information received by potential members?

How Expectations Aids Member Success How do you conduct your member orientation and how long does it last? How do you train members to conduct their service activities? What role do host sites play in member training? How frequently do you meet with site supervisors, how often the supervisors meet with members, and how do you ensure they are providing the proper guidance and support to members?

Setting Consistency for Member Success How frequently do you provide on-going training/development to members during the program year? How are members involved in planning days of service or special events? Do you assign leadership roles for members, if so, how are leaders selected? Please share an example of a member performance issue that you had to resolve. Would you approach it similarly if such an issue occurred again? If you would change your approach, how so and why?
