By: Cassidee Grunwald

Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was the

heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in Sarajevo, Bosnia.

He was assassinated in 1941 by a group called The Black Hand. He was born on December 18, 1863, Graz, Austria, and he had a wife and 3 kids.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary Slide3

The Black Hand was a group that assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in 1914. They were a secret Serbian society of the early 20th century that used terrorist methods to promote the liberation of Serbs outside Serbia from Habsburg or Ottoman rule.

A young Serbian nationalist named Gavrilo Princip I believe they are the reason for the start of World War 1 because, if Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was never assassinated by the Black Hand, then maybe the war wouldn’t have started.

The Black Hand:Slide4

Serbia was upset with Austria for their annexation with Bosnia. In 1914, Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated by a group of Serb Revolutionaries who wanted to unit Serbia and Austria so that Serbia could take control over Bosnia.

Why Serbia Did it.Slide5

Way before WW1 started there was a start of a Mutual Defense Agreement, this was signed before the war. In 1873 German Chancellor Otto Von Bismarck started worrying about the tension between France and the British, so he paired up with Russia and Austria. That all went down hill went Austria and Russia couldn’t agree on who would control the Bolcins.

When Russia left Germany and Austria became the

Dual Alliance, but soon became the Triple Alliance when Italy joined them. Before The War/Triple AllianceSlide6

The Triple Entente was an alliance system built together through separate alliances. France and Russia made a deal, then Great Britain made a deal with France, and soon Great Britain and Russia made a deal with each other.

The Allies AllianceSlide7

World War 1 started in July 28, 1914 – November 11, 1918Austria-Hungary declared war against Serbia after Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated by one of Serbia’s terrorist groups.

(This is how every other nation join WW1!!)

After war was declared, Russia stepped in to help Serbia, when Russia did that Germany stepped in to tell Russia to back off “or else”, and Russia choose “or else”. Soon Germany asked France to stay out of the war, but France signed an agreement to provide over 1 million french troops if Austria or Germany declared war on Russia, so Germany declared war on France, then France declared war on Germany.Italy stayed out of the World War for a while until Italy joined France, Great Britain and Russia to attack Austria-Hungary (thanks a secret side agreement.)
