Classification of levels of living to titles: Assisted Living to The Lodge. Memory Support to The Grove. Skilled Nursing to The Village. Independent Living to The Residences.Physical EnvironmentThe Quarterly Assurance Analysis found since our resident population has grown the public thoroughfares traditionally used for walking exercise posed a safety concern. A three quarter mile, eight foot wide walkway located on our front lawn was built. Subsequently, to accommodate evening and night walkers, solar lighting was added to ensure safe walks at night. An additional gym was added offering more convenient access and enhanced equipment to residents throughout campus. The gym boasts low impact flooring and equipment for residents with varying abilities. The gym is available to all residents, the Physical Therapy team, and team members. Personal training is also available for anyone to acclimate to equipment and establish an individualized exercise regimen.Gardening was significant in many of our residents’ lives prior to Rosewood. After identifying the continued desire to garden though our Champion Committee, an area was made available and garden boxes were built. Anyone interested in gardening received a personal garden box. Many harvested vegetables made it to resident cooking classes.

Masterpiece Living

and the tenets of successful aging became a focus for the culture at Rosewood 4 years ago. All team members were trained with the

foundational curriculum over a 6 week period. This laid the foundation for our recent accreditation in person-directed care and our neighborhood of choices. We have since evolved such that MPL is a way of life. It is included by name and component in all orientations for new residents and team members. It is part of all-team and daily huddles. It’s throughout the continuum and integrated with the ABHOW customer service culture known as ABHOW Advantage. It’s part of goal setting, event planning, wellness programs, and general conversation. Yes, it fits with our culture so well now, it is difficult to say where it starts or ends relative to the community we serve. MPL now challenges us to the next level of enhancements and community outreach on an ongoing basis. It has always been included in our marketing efforts –even listed once as the top reason for move-in. We are offering MPL to rehab guests to take home from the Village as we grow participation in the higher levels of living.

Media Outreach Rosewood residents engage in active lifestyles that have attracted local and national media coverage including CNN, national newsletters, and on local business and secondary education websites. Valentine’s Day 2014 was celebrated with a flash mob performance by the Rosewood dance team at a local shopping center. The event drew local media coverage including print and television.October 3rd, 2014 marked the 8th annual Senior Games of Kern County. The event was covered by local media and received accolades on several public websites. Rock climbing has become a highlight of the games & has provoked several interviews of climbers age 90 and over who take the challenge.Civic EngagementResidences residents assembled 100 fleece blankets that were distributed to affordable housing communities and individuals throughout Bakersfield and the surrounding areaThirty-four handmade fleece blankets were donated to the Ronald McDonald house for children fighting cancer by our Grove residentsRosewood Church contributions to community organizations include: Alzheimer’s Disease Association of Kern County (ADAKC), Bakersfield Homeless Shelter, Bakersfield Christmas for Seniors, Mission at Kern, and Local Salvation Army.

Visible Statement of Support Daily huddles are held throughout the day to ensure every team member has an opportunity to be inspired, share experiences, learn and be informed. Each week highlights a pertinent focus supported by ABHOW Advantage and Masterpiece Living. Individual celebrations and milestones are shared such as resident and team member birthdays, and team member anniversaries. The daily huddles keep Masterpiece Living fresh and alive for team members to incorporate into their lives and the lives of residents.Team Member TrainingMPL is introduced to team members during New Team Member Orientation which includes ABHOW Advantage. MPL is reemphasized further during the 30 day review through a 2 hour MPL-focused training. All new team members are required to attend. Team members are required to complete the 365 ABHOW Advantage training at which time 3 hours of MPL specific training is provided. In addition, the annual evaluations include how each team member has included MPL in their daily scope of work.Leadership Walks the Walk Leadership participates in daily huddles, leads ABHOW Advantage training sessions and shares personal experiences that promote successful aging. In-services are coordinated to educate and provide healthful/helpful hints and tools for team members to implement into their personal lives, i.e., managing stress, balancing family and work, healthy eating and exercise. Healthy Roads, a healthy lifestyle initiative geared toward team members, is championed by team members who ‘walk the talk’ daily, literally on the campus walkway for all to see. Team members are invited and encouraged to use the walkway, swimming pool and exercise equipment in both gyms.Leadership approaches decision making for residents and team members by asking fundamental questions:How are resident lives affected?Does the decision enhance successful aging? How is the team impacted?

Champion team The Rosewood Champion Team interacts with residents daily, identifies needs to enhance the MPL lifestyle, educates residents and team members about MPL and MPL components, plans events, and works to ensure residents and team members have the tools and opportunities to meet and maintain goals.Team Member Successful Aging OpportunitiesAccess to CEU training classes, in-services, Educational Fund, Achiever’s Program, Administrator in Training Program, group book reading, online computer training classes, library access.Annual Christmas Party, Monthly All Team Meeting, Department Celebrations (i.e. Assisted Living Week, Nurses’ Week, etc.), Rosewood softball games. The Rosewood team’s

process was to review the document together with our leadership team of 12 directors as a whole.

We created assignments to take on the different questions, research information needed and

examples,

talk with team members or

residents and post drafts to a shared document.  Then assignments were delegated to a lead writer with support from the leisure services team as needed.  Reviewers then were assigned for edits and clarification.  The Executive Director then reviewed the document for final input and publication.  As a last step, the team met with the review committee to discuss, make adjustments and submit.
