Adventurers and Scientists for Conservation ASC Mt Everest 8850m Damian Benegas Gymnostomum aeruginosum Moss at 6480m In 2011 a USGS scientist Rusty Rodriguez teamed up with ASC adventures to isolate plants growing at the highest elevations on earth The plants were collected and photodocumented using scientific protocols provided by Rodriguez and shipped to the Western Fisheries Research Center for analysis The plants were identified as a moss species and found to be symbiotic with microscopic fungi living entirely inside plant tissues This is the first documentation of this high elevation symbiosis.
