The longhouse villagers found much of their food in nature, but they also grew crops such as sunflowers and melons. The basic crops they grew –corn, squash ,and beans – were known as the “Three Sisters.” the name “Sisters” also refers to the spirits of these plants. The women planted the three vegetables together in rows so the beans stalks would wind around the corn stalks for support. Squashes grew between these stalks to shade the ground keeping it moist ,and to stop the weeds from growing.. How did their Government Develop?. The government all started when two wise men named Deganawidah and Hiawatha came together during a war between five of the Iroquois tribes: The Onondagas, Oneidas, Senecas, Mohawks, and Cayugas. They discussed about the war and said that the people in their tribe were dying because they were scared to come outside of their homes to find food. Since the warriors of the 5 tribes were listening, they decided that they should lay down their weapons so that their villagers wouldn’t die. .
