GROWING CORN , BEANS ,AND SQAUSH?

The longhouse villagers found much of their food in nature, but they also grew crops such as sunflowers and melons. The basic crops they grew –corn, squash ,and beans – were known as the “Three Sisters.” the name “Sisters” also refers to the spirits of these plants. The women planted the three vegetables together in rows so the beans stalks would wind around the corn stalks for support. Squashes grew between these stalks to shade the ground keeping it moist ,and to stop the weeds from growing.Slide3

WHAT WERE THE THREE SISTERS ?

The three sisters are corn, beans & squash. There are many different foods but these are the the main foods to eat.

WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT SISTER?

The most important sister is corn. A fact about corn is that a women had over one hundred fifty corn recipes.Slide5

WHAT WERE SOME USES FOR CORN?

Some uses of corn are their green leaves were sometimes used as bandages.

Corn

silk was used to make medicines. Corncobs were thrown on fire for smoking skins and that’s not even counting all the ways corn was cooked.

Dried kernels were used as beads and decorations.

Corn husks were used to make mats to sit on and sleep on. Corn

stalks were used as tubes to hold medicines. That is all the ways to use corn. Slide6

PREPARING AND

COOKING FOOD?

Women prepared and cooked all the meals. They rose early to begin shelling corn and pounding it into meal for making bread. The pounding woke everyone in the village, letting them know that breakfast was being made. The women mixed the cornmeal with cooked black beans and made large , thick pancakes , which they boiled and served with

pine needle tea sweetened with maple syrup. Slide8

IROQUIOS ?

The Iroquois ate vegetables, fruit, nuts, meat, fish, corn, beans, squash, strawberries and pine needle tea with maple syrup to sweeten the food up. There are three that are special can you name them?Slide9

WHERE IROQUIOS GET THERE MEAT AND FISH?

Hunters brought home deer, bear, beaver, rabbit, squirrel, wild turkey , and passenger pigeon. Some meat was dried and stored in clay pots or in pits lined with animal skins . Slide10

BESIDES FOOD WHAT WERE SOME USES OF THE HUNT?

The Iroquois used bows & arrows to hunt for deer, elk, ducks and fish and then later guns were used to hunt for bears , deer , rabbits , elks and ducks. Those are some uses of the hunt.Slide11

WHAT WOULD YOU EAT WITH YOUR FAMILY ?

You would eat a morning meal , like breakfast , together. After that, you were on your own. Your mother would have a pot cooking all day long. Whenever you were hungry , you could get something to eat . The Iroquois were known for there hospitality to neighbors and strangers alike. Slide12
