5- Unction of the Sick

St. James Wrote in his Epistle,

“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders (priests) of the church,

and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:14, 15)Slide6

What about Traditional Medicine?

From Sirach 38:1-2, 4 “Honor physicians for their services

,  for the Lord created them; for their gift of healing comes from the Most High, …. The Lord created medicines out of the earth, and the sensible will not despise them.” God has created medicine and nothing wrong with using it. The Bible also calls for honoring physician. St. Luke was also a physician. The patient should certainly be examined by a physician and take the medicine. However, we should seek God first and have the sacrament done as early on as possible,

not after giving up on a medical solution.Slide7

Institution of the Unction

Jesus sent the Apostles in their first mission. It was then said of the Apostles that

"they cast out many devils and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them." (Mark 6:13) Slide8

Grace Received in Unction

The church prays for the will of God to be fulfilled:

Healing the soul :Forgiveness of sin and associated physical illness.Bringing grace to the sick person to endure the sickness should the physical healing be delayed

.Healing of the bodyThe healing could be miraculous or the patient starts responding to traditional medicine and condition improves gradually.Slide9

Ritual

The priest must be fasting, as well as those attending, and also the sick person (as long as possible and if the patient’s

condition permits). The priest then takes the confession of the sick person (Sacrament of Repentance and Confession). The oil for anointing is consecrated through certain prayers, seven in number. The priest anoints the sick person with the holy oil.The sick person must also receive the Holy Communion as soon as possible afterwards.

The sick person must endeavor to anoint himself with the oil for seven consecutive days, believing in the power of God, and the power of prayer. Slide10

The Unction Prayers

Starts with thanksgiving for every condition including sickness. Many litanies are prayed beseeching God to have mercy on the sick person and to give the oil the power of healing.

The bible passages themed around helping the sick person: Effectiveness of prayer, intercessions, miracles of healing, God’s mercy and forgiveness of sin. One of the Pauline readings is1CO 13:7

“(love) bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” is useful for both the patient to endure the sickness, and for those who serve him/her to have hope and serve with love.Slide11

Healing of the Body

The main concern of the patient and loved ones is often the healing of the body.

The unction is about asking for God to have mercy on the sick person and for God’s will to be fulfilled. We trust in the mercy and love of God and that He would do what is good for the person. To God the soul is much more important. The body will eventually return to earth. Healing is conditional on Faith and Obedience. But even so timing of it depends on several factors.Slide12

Conditions to receive Healing

of the Body

Healing requires the faith and obedience of the sick person. Unbelief would be similar to the people of Nazareth, where, “The Lord Jesus did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief” (Matthew 13:58

).The perseverance of anointing oneself with the unction oil for 7 days (Just as the sick preserve in taking medicine), shows:faith in the effectiveness of the Sacrament, and the patient’s obedience to the church rite.Slide13

Timing or receiving Healing of the Body- F.A.Q.

We submit to the Divine Wisdom when it comes to the timing of the healing, trusting that God is listening, capable and gives more than we ask. If it is the will of God that the physical healing is delayed or not granted, how useful is the sacrament?

The sacrament reminds the patient to trust in the mercy and love of God and that He would do what is good for the person. The grace of God helps the patient endure sickness with thanksgiving should the cure be delayed or not granted. Patient who endures with thanksgiving is crowned in heavens and consoled on earth. QASlide14

Healing of the Body- F.A.Q

Q. How could a prolonged sickness be a good thing?!

A. Actually the divine wisdom may see it fit for a person to remain sick for some time or indefinitely. Our days on earth are short when compared to eternity in heavens where there is no sickness or sorrow.

What matters to God, and hopefully to us, is the salvation of the souls (patient and people surrounding him/her).There are several examples/reasons for the delay.QASlide15

Delay of the Physical Healing & SALVATION OF SOULS

Sickness may prolong sometimes for the chastisement of the patient

leading to the salvation of the soul.Mary, Moses’ Sister Example: Moses prayed for his sister, Miriam, after she was punished by leprosy . The Lord answered his prayer. However, the healing was not immediate and was delayed 7 days for the chastisement of Mariam (Numbers 12).The will of God may be

a prolonged sickness for the benefit of the surrounding people who may also come closer to God, pray more, and even realize the worthlessness of the world. Slide16

When NO Physical Healing is for PROTECTION!

Sickness may be for the protection of the sick person! St. Paul’s Example :

He was righteous, apostle of Christ, and had the gift of healing yet he had a sickness himself. He prayed to God about it, with faith, but the Lord refused to grant him the physical healing , saying, “My grace is sufficient for you” (2 Corinthians 12:9). St. Paul later understood the divine wisdom in keeping this sickness “.. lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations” 2 Corinthians 12:7. It turned to be that St. Paul saw many revelations/visions including being caught up to the third heaven (2CO 12:2) and sickness was to remind him of his weakness, protecting him from falling in pride.Slide17

More than One Priest – When Possible!

It is preferred (not a must) if more than one priest co-administer the sacrament when possible.

“Matthew 18:19-20 “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”Also healing may not be attributed to a specific priest. The priest is then protected from pride and the patient/family may realize it is indeed the power of the sacrament not the person. Slide18

Unction and Departure of the Sick Person

The sacrament does not prevent the departure of the sick person (death).

Departure is a relief from the earthly pain and a start of wonderful life in heavens free from sorrow and sickness. The church has full faith in the divine wisdom doing what is best for every one. During the sacrament it is prayed that in case of death God may accept the patient’s soul in heavens. The catholic church calls this Sacrament "Extreme (or last) Unction," on the basis that it is administered to the sick only when they are at the point of death.

However, the Bible speaks of it as a means of healing, and not as helping the sick at the point of death (James 5).Slide19

Do you have the Faith of this Little Girl! (

2kings 5)

Now Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Syria, was a great and honorable man in the eyes of his master, ….. but a leper.the Syrians had gone out on raids, and had brought back captive a young girl from the land of Israel. She waited on Naaman's wife.

Then she said to her mistress, "If only my master were with the prophet who is in Samaria! For he would heal him of his leprosy.” Faith of the girl made a believer from the wife who told her husband.Naaman went in and told his master the kingThen the king of Syria said, "Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel." So he departed and took with him ten talents of silver”So he went down and dipped seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.Slide20

Key points about Unction!

Christ gave the disciples the authority to anoint with oil for healing. St. James reminds us in his

epistle to seek God first and early on.In unction, we pray that God do what is best and help the patientHealing of the soul and Body is normally granted if the patient has faith.

Healing of the body sometimes is delayed or not granted at all, to bring the patient or the loved ones closer to God, to protect the spiritual well-being of the believer, or to reward the thankful patient enormously in heavens. The sacrament brings peace and endurance to the patient throughout the sickness.Slide21
