PEOPLES PLAINS / THE ALGONQUIN
Our first group of Aboriginal people lived in the plains and is named as such and the Algonquins.These tribes inhabited the North American center.We now call this territory, the province of Alberta, Saskatchewan province, west of the province of Manitoba.
The land occupied extended to the United States and almost touched the Gulf of Mexico.
This land is flat, without mountains or lakes.Slide3
This people was also called buffalo hunters
Bison met almost all the needs of the people.Slide4
Algonquin also lived by hunting the serf, moose and antelope.
They also gathered berries and wild plants.Slide5
Les Algonquins
Plains Peoples or the Algonquins, lived in teepees and wigwams.
Tipis or wigwams were easy to
move
shelters when the seasons changed.
Each family had its proper
teepee
or wigwam.
Tipis or wigwams belonged to

Circle
The circle was sacred to the Algonquins.Most things in life are based on the circle:The cycle of day;The four winds;The cycle of the moon;
The seasons;

Governance
The Algonquins were governed by councils of men and women.Decisions are made by consensusEveryone expressed their opinion and reached a agreement.Slide8
Children
The children were very important because they are the growing culture.Children spent much time with their grandparents and elders who were highly respected.The Elders knew the history, customs and traditions of the band.Slide9
The Great Spirit or Creator
The Great Spirit created the Earth for everyone to share.All things and all creatures were sacred and should be respected.Slide10
This land is now called Canada:
Canada has several beliefs that are found throughout the country.In the west, we find them in the
Rocky Mountains.
In the center, we find
them in the
plains.
To the east, we find
them in forests

Houses
The Algonquins live in houses called wigwams. A wigwam is constructed by curved branches covered with bark or animal skin.Slide14
We like to cover the ground
with pine needles.We put our beautiful furs over the pine needles
to sleep.Slide15
In the middle of the wigwam we made a fire to keep warm and to cook.Slide16
The Algonquins
have no permanent village. They are nomads.In summer, the Algonquins live with at least one other family in a large wigwam dome.
In winter, they live with just their immediate families in a smaller
conical wigwam.Slide17
Summer
- Families go to fish camps and share large wigwams. The men are fishing.
The women gather wild plants and berries.Slide18
Men make canoe
from the bark of the white birch.Slide19
In the fall, we harvest wild rice and nuts.Slide20
They are also trying to dry food for the winter.Slide21
In
the winter, the Algonquin family leave and carry their wigwams.Slide22
They move to track the migration of deer and moose. They live by

In the spring, they meet with other families to harvest maple syrup.Slide24

Aboriginal children do not go to school. They learn by observing the adults around them. They learn by helping their parents with work.Slide26
The Vision Quest
Young boys complete a vision quest when they become teenagers. They help their fathers with hunting and fishing. When they move (nomads), the men hunt on the way to nourish their families.
