2. Tackling Desertification Date: Monday, 12 October 2020Learning Objectives:To be able to describe how better land management can help combat desertificationTo be able to explain how planting trees can helpTo be able to evaluate how appropriate technology can helpClasswork

3. Starter: Fill in the blanks! The majority of the ________people who live in the Sahel region suffer from ______. Niger is losing 250,000 hectares of ________ every day through desertification. Women in some villages ______ as far as 25 kilometres a day to fetch _____ for their families. Water, Farmland, 50 million, walk, poverty Stretch: can you think of any solutions to desertification?

4. How can soil quality and water be preserved? Land management strategiesTree- planting schemes to help bind the soil Plant grass on slopes to stabilise topsoil Build small rock dams to trap rainwater in gullies (large ditch/ small valley)Collect rainwater on roofs by having flat roof with surrounding lipBuilding terraced slopes on farmed sloped land

5. Bunds One successful strategy, introduced in the Sahel countries of Mali and Burkina Faso, is the construction of low stone walls called bunds. The stones are planted in lines parallel to the slope gradient. They help to prevent soil erosion, and slow down the flow of rainwater over the baked ground. When water pools behind a bund instead of running fast over the land, it has time to soak into the ground.

6. Run off is slowed by the bund, giving more time for infiltration Rainwater has time to infiltrate and recharge soils moisture. Eroded soil is trapped by the bund. Top soil or organic matter is deposited here.Bunds are placed 10m to 25m apart.Activity: Draw a labelled diagram of a bund. Stretch: how can planting trees help to stop desertification?

7. Planting Trees: How do they help with desertification? Tree roots help to stabilise the soil, while their decomposing it adds valuable nutrients to the soilsSo what are they going to do? Just plant more trees anywhere? The African Union’s proposed Green Wall is a plan to plant a wall of trees across the entire Sahel region, running from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean. It offers hope for sustainable development among communities, and will bring work to poor communities. Think: What advantages and disadvantages do you think this development scheme might face? Stretch: Do you think it is sustainable?

8. Advantages It offers hope among poor communitiesIt will provide work for the desperately poorIt will bring political co-operation in the regionIt might reduce conflict and the number of refugee campsDisadvantages It will be decades before it reaches maturity and stabilises the soil.Climate change predictions suggest aridity may threaten the survival of the treesIt is expensive

9. Appropriate Technology Removing trees for firewood is one of the most damaging human activities in the desert fringe because… Wood is vanishing as a resource with population growth. The soil erosion from chopping them down prevents future regrowth. This is unsustainable land management, but some people have no access to gas or electricity so have no other way! Learning Objectives:To be able to describe how better land management can help combat desertificationTo be able to explain how planting trees can helpTo be able to evaluate how appropriate technology can help

10. “Efficient stoves” The Toyola stove in Ghana or the Upesi stove in Kenya are both examples that are being distributed by charities such as Practical Action and the Global Alliance for Clean cookstoves. They are made locally using more available materials like clay, and much smaller amounts of wood and charcoal. Some also have a thermacouple, generating sufficient electricity from the heat to charge a mobile phone- which growing numbers of Sahel farmers own to gain access to weather forecasts.

11. Solar Power Solar power can provide energy for cooking and other needs. Also, earnings from solar power could provide money to help the region tackle desertification. Hot deserts and their fringes may be seen as the world’s most resource rich places.

12. Plenary Which desertification management scheme do you think is best? Justify you answer.Planting treesAppropriate Technology Learning Objectives:To be able to describe how better land management can help combat desertificationTo be able to explain how planting trees can helpTo be able to evaluate how appropriate technology can help

13. Homework: Exam QuestionHow have better land management schemes been put in place to tackle desertification? (9+3)Include: Introduction on desertification and where it occursExplain how planting trees can help, including advantages and disadvantages Explain two types of appropriate technology and say how they help. Conclude what has been discussed. Learning Objectives:To be able to describe how better land management can help combat desertificationTo be able to explain how planting trees can helpTo be able to evaluate how appropriate technology can help
