SITUATION REPORT: Unseasonal rain and hailstorms have destroyed crops in many parts of the country, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Andhra Pradesh and heavy snowfall and avalanche hindered the daily life in J&K . States affected Uttar [radish, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Andhra Pradesh Impact on Maharastra A crop on nearly 20 lakh hect ares is feared to have been destroyed, state officials said. Bes ides, hailstorms have claimed 2 lives, damaged over 18,222 houses and killed around 9,180 poultry birds and farm animals . A total of 30,000 villages were affected because of rains and hailstor m in 28 districts of Maharastra. Impact on Punjab & Haryana Wheat crops at several places including Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Nawanshahar, Mohali, Tarn Taran and in Palwal and Yamunanagar in neighbouring Haryana were flattened because of rain and high velocity winds. Response from Government and Humanitarian Agencies  State governments sought relief from the Centre.  Maharastra Govt. has sought permi ssion from the Election Commission of India to give other benefits to affected farmers such as additional loans, waiver of electricity bills etc.  A government of India team arrived in the state on Wednesday to survey the damage. Also announced monetary relief for the families of farmers who had died due to rains or, had lost their livestock an d appealed to the central government to provide aid to the affected people, and to form schemes to protect the victims in future .
