COVID-19 SITUATION IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS AS OF 26TH JANUARY, 2021 PRESENTED BY MoE AT EDUCATION CLUSTER MEETING ON 28TH JANUARY, 2021 COVID-19 SITUATION IN SCHOOLS ALL schools were closed on 18th January, 2020 Boarding school learners were retained to be assessed and tested Preliminary testing results showed mass infection To cut school-community infection cycle a decision was taken to maintain all boarders in school Students are isolated as per health guidelines on COVID-19 SUMMARY OF STUDENTS STILL IN SCHOOLS WITH BOARDING FACILITIES SUMMARY OF STUDENTS SAMPLED AND THEIR RESULTS PER DIVISION SUPPORT TO SCHOOL Psychosocial support Nutritional support Additional shelter in terms of tents Providing sporting activities School related support Standard operating procedures for boarding schools developed and circulated REQUIREMENTS IN BOARDING SCHOOLS Students in boarding schools were retained to cut school community transmission A total number in the boarding schools is 43, 869 Boarding schools have registered large numbers of students who are positive. To manage the situation in boarding schools we need 1000 tents to be used for isolation of those positive , asymptomatic and those quarantined awaiting tests. Each of the 121 boarding schools requires at least 4 tents giving 484 The other day schools require a tent for isolation 605 staff who support students in boarding schools need specialized PPEs just like health workers in isolation centres. The staff also need training on how to handle COVID cases in the schools as they man the isolation centres CHALLANGES Some schools released continuing students without being tested In some cases students were released by health personnel after screening and testing Parents and guardians not trusting schools to take care of their wards hence pressuring for release of students Delay in health officials in testing the students Challenges Not enough nutritional support due to limited funding in boarding schools Lack of monitoring and support in the isolation hostels Lack of PPEs for the frontline teachers who interact with the students on daily basis Some teachers reluctant to provide academic support in fear of contracting the virus Lack of protocols for handling a symptomatic student SUMMARY DATA OF MSCE CANDIDATES DIVISION MSCE CANDIDATES NED 2804 CEED 1802 CWED 2155 SEED 1708 SHED 846 SWED 1037 TOTALS 10352 MSCE CANDIDATES Administration of MSCE ends on Friday the 29th January, 2020 There are 10,352 candidates who are boarders Some of these candidates were screened and tested how ever there was no
