slide3. Teacher guidance and possible misconceptions When teaching this concept, teachers should be aware of the following:
In a contraction, the apostrophe shows where a letter or letters would be if the words were written in full.
Explicitly teach pupils that the apostrophe should come in the space where the letters are missing.
It’s means it is or it has and is never used for the possessive.
Some contractions can be formed from more than one expanded form, e.g. he’d = he had or he would.
The expanded forms of should’ve, would’ve and could’ve are often given as ‘of’ rather than ‘have’ due to poor spoken English.
Apostrophes are also used to show possession. 3
slide4. Week 1, Session 1 4 Teachers should click here to access a short video explaining this concept.
“Theyr’e not interested in a prickly pest from our back garden,” retorted Zak. “Wel’l just tell Grandpa about it. He’ll be really interested. It dosen’t matter that we willn’t have a picture of it. We can find one in a book, can’t we?” 18
