Teacher guidance and possible misconceptions When teaching this concept, teachers should be aware of the following:
The prefix un– is revisited from Year 1 Block 6.
This block covers the prefixes dis–, mis–, in–, il–, im–, ir– .
The remaining Year 3 and 4 prefixes are covered in Year 4 Block 4.
Most prefixes are added to the beginning of root words without any change.
The prefix in– can mean not and into. This block focuses on in– meaning not. The spelling of this prefix changes before root words ending in l, m, p and r.
These letters do not always act as a prefix at the beginning of words. 3
Shine a Light “It’s not ilegal to sit here, is it?” shouted Lily. She was being impatient with everyone again and she knew it. She had been sitting imobile on the low wall for about ten minutes and children were staring. Some people were immpossible! It was irelevant what they thought of her. At that moment, she was disappointed in herself. She had been missbehaving in class and now she had to face the consequences. Lily was un certain how her parents would react when she told them that her teacher wanted to see them. She knew that they would dissagree with whatever she came up with as her excuses. They knew Lily had many immperfections. Chattering in class was one thing but disobeying a teacher was very different entirely. 18
It was ilogical that Stan should feel so un certain about how the final rehearsal would go today. They had been practising for weeks and he was brilliant at his part. However, this would be irelevant if the rest of the class didn’t pull their socks up, stop misbehaving and just get on with learning their lines and positions on the stage. Kaley dissagreed with everything her classmates said, Jason said his words in correctly every time and Hardeep’s were so ilegible that she misread them constantly. Stan was becoming more and more inntolerant of them all. It would be highly iregular if they were the only year who couldn’t present a fantastic show on the day. 33 Spotlight on spelling
