slide3. Teacher guidance and possible misconceptions When teaching this concept, teachers should be aware of the following:
Adding a suffix to a root word changes the word meaning and the word class.
If a suffix starts with a consonant letter, it is added straight on to most root words without any change to the last letter of those words.
If a root word with more than one syllable ends in y with a consonant before it, the y changes to an i before the suffix is added.
Explicitly teach pupils that the suffixes –ful and –ly are spelt with one l.
Many of the root words can take more than one of these suffixes, e.g. joyful, joyless.

The word argument has the letter e removed from the root word.
If there is a vowel before the y in the root word, just add the suffix, e.g. joyless, playful.

On the court, the players carefully went through their routine, starting with small movements, until they were hitting the ball with powerfull shots back and forth across the net.
